Hi Group,

My name is Mike, I live in Charlotte, NC (I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes). I wanted to take a quick second to say hello and introduce myself. I was recently laid off and I have been looking into different business opportunities in my area and I have decided to focus on the PW bizz. I plan to launch on August 1,st 2008 and in the meantime I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the biz, drum up customers, and get my rig and insurance squared away. I plan on starting graduate school in January and I am looking for a way to work my way through school. I worked my way through my Bachelors degree and it was no picnic trying to find jobs that fit my schedule, paid a decent wage, and finally had a boss that didn't give me grief about having to leave early to work on a project.

I have several questions that I would love to hear feedback on if possible.

(1) Has anyone currently or in the past worked in this field as an owner/ operator and gone to school. I'd love to hear the pro's and cons that you went through to see if I am thinking along the same lines.

(2) I plan to focus mainly on roofs (most of the homes in this area are covered with black algae), decks, driveways and exterior housing to start. In the winter here most days are above freezing. What could I focus on during cold snaps (any ideas would be appreciated).

(3) There are five major lakes in my area and I'm sure I could eventually focus on wood restoration on piers. Does anyone have any ideas on the requirements needed to spray over and apply sealer to piers over a major body of water.

(4) I have read many of the basic requirements (4.0 gpm and 3500PSI) but I have not heard many opinions about good brand names of PW's.

Thanks,

Mike

4.0 GPM @ 3500 PSI is by no means a requirement, although it will be much easier. I started 2 years ago as a weekend warrior with a Craftsman 2.5 GPM at 2500 psi. That machine worked fine and got the same results as a bigger unit.......just took a hell of alot longer. I still have that machine and use it from time to time for smaller jobs, like the dreaded fence(yuck).

welcome!
