Hey guys i cleaned my first roof last weekend with the apple sauce..It was pretty dirty but it had been recently cleaned like 2 years ago. the sauce worked great and it came very clean wonderful job. well today i went to do another roof with the sauce mix and it didnt work very good at all. This roof was cleaned about 4 years ago and had a bad alge and mildew build up on it. they are both barrel tile roofs and are right across the street from each other now im not sure but i posted a thread awhile ago and one of my questions was why does in all of your photos it looks like the chemicals turn white on the roof. now im not sure if its cause your using the cider mix and maybe that does it but im not to sure. One other question and it might sound stupid but do you rinse the roof with plain water when your done or just leave the chemicals on there.....And the last question is, would it be better for the cider on tile roofs and sauce on shingles or does it not matter? I am very confussed and wondering why it didnt work as good today as it did the first time. the mixes were the same so i know thats not it.. If you have any ideas please let me know... thanks a lot

Sounds ike your chlorine may have weakened over the last week. If it was the same mixture, and didnt work, thats what it would have to be.

When i said it was the same mix i ment like the exact same measurements...sorry for confussing you but it was different batch but the same measurements but thanks for the reply though.

you used shingle strength Apple Sauce on a TILE roof ?
What percentage of chlorine was it ?
If you look at the Apple Sauce formula, it suggests making the clorine ratio a tad higher for tile roofs:)

Thanks Chris maybe thats what it was..the chlorine i get is said to be about 17% so i think thats pretty strong but i will give it another try tomorrow.

Chris drops a few alka seltzer in his mix for the foam effect. :D

Beachy,
There are several variables here but my question to you is:
Do you put any liquid detergent in the mix such as Apple Blossom DAWN? It helps the solution cling to the roof, especially tile (wear safety gear or spray from a ladder if roof becomes to slick) and helps to emulsify the dirt and pollutants and helps suspend the detached algae so it can be rinsed off more easily and helps to clean more completely. It also gives a foam or "white" color. And a final benefit is it smells better! Just don't add too much or you'll play heck getting it off if you perform a rinse down. Just my opinion.

Dave: Is there a supplier for the Apple Dawn or do you just buy from local store would like to buy in bigger quantities. Thanks Dh:D

I believe the answer to the white color is the sun. Reflection from the sun of wet roof gives shiny white color on pic, or its soap

Hey thanks guys for all the feed back. Unfortunatly i have not had the oppertunity to clean any more roofs with the mix. I guess people around here dont want clean properties. Im still working on marketing and ive sent out are 500 post cards so im waiting to see if i get any respondse. If not i guess i need to try another method but i will keep you all posted on how it all works out for me.

Dont expect much from 500 postcards. When you send out 5000 and dont get any response, then, I would worry and change the design. Keep up the good work, and keep advertising, and good things will come your way. When they do, it is overwhelming. Good luck!

Haha, thats true but right now im having some money issues so im doing the best that I can. Hopefully sooner rather than later something will break for me. Thanks for all the good advise...

Waiting to hear the answers...

Can we still get the answer to the original questions:

1) why does in all of your photos it looks like the chemicals turn white on the roof?

2) do you rinse the roof with plain water when your done or just leave the chemicals on there?

3) and the last question is, would it be better for the cider on tile roofs and sauce on shingles or does it not matter?

Soap will turn white, and so will TSP on hot days.
We rinse, or leave on, depending on what a customer wants ?
Every roof and situation is different.
We sell a cleaning, and a treatment, the treatment lasts longer IF left on.
Apple Cider is OK on cement tile roofs, but on glazed ceramic tiles, it can be slick.
Suggest apple sauce for them, but cut down on the Borax to 1/2 suggested amount.
Run off on a ceramic barrel tile roof is a problem, and Borax can harm plants w/o an experienced groundman.

Thanks Chris,

You are an officer and a gentleman. I appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. I've done my share of roofs, but I am all ears when it comes to getting advice from a pro. You are definitely the pro around here. Seems like I see your guys everywhere. I have no problem with my competitors because I believe there is more than enough work for all of us.

Thanks again Chris.
