i am looking to start a business in the hood and duct cleaning in the restaurant industry, what kind of state certification do i need for this business (new york) also looking to clean frontage, awning and sidewalks, any info would be appreciated, thank you, john g.

Rules and authority depend on the state that you plan to work in. Hood exhaust cleaning is a specialty service that uses pw in the process of cleaning. In a 5 hour job the pw is used for about 30-50 minutes.

With experience, you can get a cert. from IKECA or PWNA. Both have tests that are similar, however both require experience in the service.

Kitchen Grease Exhaust Cleaning

Kitchen Grease Exhaust Cleaning is something that you should't attempt without training aor experience. This type of cleaning exposes one to many hazzards and pitfalls. Some issues to consider after training are: Certification{is it required, if not should you do it anyway for a sales tool?}, Insurance {do you have the right kind and enough coverage?} etc.
When you enter this field you are practicing fire prevention. What you do must be done correctly. You must not omit or forget anything. Peoples lives may depend on you doing your job correctly. I am aware of at least 3 law suits currently in litigation. The smallest of these is for a figure in excess of $12,000,000.00.
This is why I say that to enter this field without proper training is ill advised.:)

I have heard that doing Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning in New York City a contractor must get a permit for every job to be done. I would assume that this would also require an official to inspect the job after compleation. I am not sure how true this is though. My information was not received first hand.

I defenitely find out. Please let us know.

Good Luck
Michael
