Statin in 40-50 degree weather.

Staining

Hey, Pat! Your staining will go fine as long as the wood is completely dry (12% moisture is the target.) If you don't have a moisture meter, but the wood has been cleaned and sitting dry for a good while, you are probably OK. This time of year and at the temps you and I are living with this week, I would want the fence to sit dry for a week.

There are no temperature limitations on RS. If you were using a product that had any coating properties, you would see words on the container like "Do not apply if you expect the temperature to drop below 54 degrees over the next 24 hours." I used a product once that had that warning in spite of some very cool temperatures, and the stuff turned white overnight. It all had to be stripped and replaced, on my nickel. Oops!

One more idea - electric socks. I can't believe we dipped down into the 20s in Hotlanta.

Adden-dumb

One more thing, buddy. Wait to stain until later in the day during the cooler months. We never started our stain crews until 10 or 11 in the morning between November and March. Washing you can do at any hour, but you want the wood to warm up as much as possible before you try to stain. If it is not a big project, I might wait until 1 in the afternoon to start (with the idea of being done before 4).

Hey Pete,

Thanks for the prompt response. It has been sitting with sunshine (even though very very cool) since I believe Monday night. (it rained a little on Monday).

Other than that, it has just been cold, but the sun has been out every day since Monday, so I think it should be OK.

I do need to get me one of thoe Moisture Meters next year during spring when I try to expand more into Wood Restoration. I must say, it's all because of you and tracy ;).

Thanks! Ill post pics whenever Im done.

So im almost done. I ran out of Ready Seal, so I need to get more on Monday (I knew I should of listened to Tracy, lol).

Anyways, I attached 2 pics (I took it from my blackberry, so not very good quality) One is before staining (after clean and neutralize), and the other one is after staining (about an 45 mins after I got done with that part)

I love it! And this is my first time doing anything with wood :p

Completely done now :) I could of done some better prep work (had a lot of bushes when I was cleaning and brightening it, I cut them down just before staining) so some parts are a little dark, but overall, im pretty happy with my 1st fence :D

If it's going to be cool bring your stain in the house a day or two before your going to use it to get it warm too.
