Need Help

We were asked yesterday to provide a bid on a hotel construction clean up. There is about a mile of curbine to do with parts that have loose asphalt on it and mulch behind much of it. Also he is wanting the windows cleaned. I have never done windows before. there are 103 windows that are 8-10 feet tall and about 6 feet wide. The windows have three stickers on each one (largest about 3"X 3"). I have never done windows before and have zero clues a to how long they will take or even what method to use.

My main question is how to do the windows and what to charge for the windows. He is providing a lift for us.

I give all my window work to a local guy who only does windows. Works good that way. I know how to use a squeegie but there a little more to it than that.

Sub the windows and mark it up. I can't believe how fast and how nice of a job a real window washer can do. You can also do a lot of damage to glass removing stickers etc on new construction.

Thad Eckhoff of Apex Services ('Thad' on here) might be able to help you... I think he does construction cleanup windows...

Also, Chris King of Clean King in Hawaii ('ckingclean' on here) recently answered some questions that Greg Nash of Splash & Dash had about windows... they might be a couple of good folks to start with.

Travis, did you gever get a hot box?
No!! But a kind gentleman on this bb offered me one, all I have to do is come pick it up!! I am still looking for one though because I could really use two of them!
I tried to call you the other day to see if you still had that one, couldnt get any answer. Do you still have it??

My apologies for not getting back with you. It really is a good thing for you as it broke down shortly after we talked about it.

With the new glass, tempered glass, etc.... you have a lot of problems with the windows getting scratched when using a scraper or razor blade because when the windows are made, the Q.C. is not there so there are a lot of "fines" that blow around and get on the glass so when you go to scrape them, even with soap you will get scratches.

I would have a window guy sub it from you or have him give you a price and do the work and you pay him. Most guys with several years experience in this area will know how to do the job without scratching the glass.

Steven - Thanks for the positive feedback!

These guys are right, sub it out. Make damn sure though that you sub it to the right person! If he screws it up, you can still get pulled into it.

Window cleaning is great to get into, just don't start at this level.

Most Tempered glass is made with a manufacturing defect. The glass will scratch if you scrape it, not your fault, but they will blame you. I learned the hard way. I had a builder threatening to run me out of town!

Give me a call if you want and I can give you some tips about how to find a qualified contractor. Or you could pay my expenses and I'll come over and teach you how to clean windows! There's only 103 panes? How many stories?
