I just recently started doing direct mailing. I hit them every 2 weeks.
 
Tested a lot of days, and I always got the best repsonse when I mailed on Tuesdays. Took me a lot of research to figure why and also listening too and watching a lot of my customers retrieve there mail. I'll PM you my reasons why I think I get the best response if you want.
 
We send printed direct mail, but we also use Constant Contact to keep in touch with our customers (www.constantcontact.com). It allows you to create your own e-newsletters, e-blasts, e-promos, etc. and is much cheaper than paying for postage, paper and printing costs. It also allows us to reach out to our customers and advertise our promotions more frequently than we would if we relied solely on printed direct mail.

Moral o' the story: It might be a good idea to make a point to collect current and potential customers' email addresses so you can get (and stay) in touch via e-communications, which are much more economical.
 
When we give an estimate to any potential customer we have them fill out all of there information including email addresses. This information is a very important step into our marketing process. Even if the customer did not hire our company we constantly send our coupons, blogs, updates, promotions and we have eventially won over that customer who did not hire us the first time. It takes a person that see's or hears your name like 19-20 times before they buy from you (fact).

Direct marketing is target marketing, that analytic the characteristic where consumers are targeted with matching products.

If you've bought something from a catalog company, they can rent your name out to another. Mail regularly and mail often, but make your mailings relevant and interesting. The more often you mail to your mailing list, the more you're at the front of those customer's minds when it comes time to buy.
 
You always note the special occasions of customers like birthdays as well as anniversaries, and then use these information to show your appreciation of them. This is a helpful way to increase the direct mail marketing.
