Stone Fence

Bidding on a stone fence ( see pics) they want me to bid it two ways. first just wash it, second wash it and seal it. ON BOTH SIDES!! it's 1400 feet long and 6 feet tall. I have no problemas with cleaning it, i'll spray it with a little love and it'll look great, However sealing a natural stone verticle surface is a little different for me. Anyone know of a good sealer out there???

Have you done some test spots in many different areas on the very black stuff?

That looks like split face block which is very porous and holds and absorbs the stain easily.

Before going too far, go do some test spots to see if it will come clean.

I was working on some split face block and after trying around 25-35 different chemicals and combinations, there was nothing that would clean it (maybe HF Acid but it would have to be very strong and probably unsafe and cost a lot) so we gave up. We called and talked to many of the suppliers out there, The chemical companies like Prosoco, EacoChem, etc.... and could not get it cleaned affordably.

It was block that was stained so it had a "checkerboard" look when you stand back and look at it.

You don't want to run into that kind of situation.

Just a FYI. Good luck.

Had the same problem Chris.....

prosoco.com for cleaners and sealers. They have a fantastic customer service desk that can help you. You need to find out what type of stone it's made out of and try to test for porosity. Sealing that wall could get very expensive and mis calculating how much sealer it will take could burn up all of your profit margin very quickly.

At times I have had similar results as Chris and Gene, all you can do is try and explain to the customer that not all the stains may come out. Natural stone can already have some discolorations in it that are there from its formation and may not be able to be removed as they can go all the way through the stone.

Aldon Chemical for sealing.....you can probably get the exact cleaner you need there too.

Ditto: Been there done that to Chris, good advise. Some of that type stone absorbs those stains real deep. We had a community that has that exact wall and we tried everything also. It looked alot better when we were done but you could still see the black shadows. They eventualy gave up and covered the wall with Ivy type vines which eventualy covered the entire wall, looks better and no maintenance.
