Ron,

Yes, I sold the van, equipment and entire business just a couple of weeks after putting it up for sale.

As you may have noticed, I still visit your board. Even though I no longer have any involvement in the business, it's still in my blood.

Thanks for asking.

Laura

Hey Laura,
You can't get it out of your Blood. Thats the way I feel about this business.

When you had your business did you ever think to try to crack the commercial market in NY City??

I actually had an offer to do a commercial account in NY city and I turned it down. This account also expands out to Long Island which I do service.

I just called this company back the other day and I told them I would be interested in going into the city to service this place.

Its not really worth it but I'm thinking that maybe I can get more business out there while I am powerwashing. Its a gamble but there is a ton of Commercial establishments out there in the Big Apple and I noticed that No Powerwashers that I know of has ever talked about doing work there.

Its either an Un tapped Market(Which I doubt) or its a gold mind that other Powerwashers are keeping it to themselves.

Knowing that your "Other Job" I believe is in the City what do You think about this Crazy thought of mine??

Hey John,

Over the years we only did a handful of one-time only cleanings in NYC. We got more calls from Queens than NYC.

We realized working in NYC wasn't worth the time and effort of traveling into the city for just one job at a time. Of course, if you can get a large job or build up some steady accounts and knock them off at once, then it would be worth it. Coming from Long Island, the travelling was just too unbearable and the pedestrian traffic dictated when we could do the work which was mostly requested after midnight. And at that hour, there's no access to their water supply which forced us to use the fire hydrant. The last fire hydrant we hooked up to must have had a lot of sediment in it because my machine got messed up even though we let the water run until it was clear.

I've heard that the older, historic buildings must follow certain codes, you can only use certain chemicals and you must get a permit whenever doing any type of restoration. I think there must be one company that has a monopoly with these types of large restoration jobs which were way out of our league anyway.

From working at my "other job" in NYC, I've only seen one major power washing company around . . . . their name on the truck is "something Waterproofing". From my office window, I watched them restore a building for about 3 months. They had a lot of guys on scaffolding hanging from the roof.

As far as flat work and awnings, I've noticed that most buildings and restaurants have their maintenance guys do the light power washing. Some have pretty decent equipment including Landa portables and surface cleaners, while others hose down everything EVERY day with a garden hose which seems to maintain it just fine.

It's up to you how aggressive you wanna be, but I was more comfortable in my own territory . . . Long Island and Queens which had just as much work to offer. NYC was not our cup of tea.

Believe it or not, the Big Apple is a pretty clean place (at least midtown and uptown where I frequent).

Good luck,

Laura
