Is there any mapping software available where I can plug in addresses and it will automatically map out a path with the shortest distances? I am talking more advance than mapquest where you manually have to reroute each location when they are not in direct path?

Get an Iphone.. I love it the gps on it that comes with it will reroute you in case you get lost automatically.

John

I have GPS, In the past month we have picked up 15 restaurants and 36 gas stations and they are all over, it is about software spitting out the route to me. I have been manually typing it into mapquest and been changing it when they were not in direct path.

Thanks for the idea though.

give me a call Jonathan

I use DeLorme street Atlas 2005, its loaded on my laptop, but i have the handheld version also,

shortest, fastest, you can move map stop points etc., print map view, and directions.

I also purchased the Blue Logger from the same company. Plug it in or use the rechargeable battery and it will log every where your vehicle went and what speed too. You just have to download it wirelessly when it returns to the shop. It can also be used as a navigation if need be, but must be connected to the laptop or PDA for the maps (connection via blue tooth or USB)

Iphones/android phones have built in google maps in which you can get satellite views and on Android phones they have streetview as well which lets you see the actual house, gmaps leaps and bounds over any gps ive ever used and ive used many.

Go play around with this. http://www.batchgeo.com/ I have all my locations in there. It will map them out just by clicking on the location title. It's free!! You have to build a spreadsheet that matches how they want the info loaded, but other than that it's cool .

Garmin Basecamp software is free. It will sinc to most gps units. You just get whatever maps you want. It will actually calculate different routes and you can make custom maps with it. Really easy. I can select a bunch of waypoints send to a custom map, name it and print it

Iphones and other small devices will not do what you need to. They also require internet connection to be alive.

You need Microsoft Streets and Trips. It is offline software map exactly what you need. You just enter into the search box: house number, name of the street and zip code and it locates the address immediately. You don't need to enter 10 steps for 10 minutes like the GPS devices work. You also can void areas where you do not want to go through and it will automatically change the route. You can add additional address points by entering the address or by pointing with the mouse on the map, change the order of the points with one click and manage your route however you like. It is very simple software. The software gets updated every year and all new streets and addresses are up to date.
The software has many other features like gas consumption and etc.. which I have never used, but you might like them useful as well.

Get the newest version 2010 for 50 bucks with GPS device or without GPS device for $34. I am surprised how much the price dropped since I first bought it 5 years ago ($100).

Here is a link from Amazon:

With GPS
Without GPS

2005, 07, 08 and 09 versions are not friendly with bluetooth GPS receivers. May be 2010 is.. But for instant GPS navigation, small GPS Garmin device is more suitable than LapTop anyways..
