Surface cleaner swivel leaking

This swivel off of my little 16in surface cleaner started leaking. It comes in handy sometimes so I hate not to have it working. I have a question. Is it worth rebuilding the swivel or should I just buy a new one. This is the first one I have ever had go bad. If I can rebuild it where should I get the parts and is it fairly easy? If I should buy new, where is the best place? Thanks fellas!!!

Hey Spencer, i just rebuilt 3 surface cleaner swivels today, if its only leaking it will just need seals only about $40.00 versus $275.00 for a new Swivel assembly.

I go thru seals and bearings and shaft's all the time, especially when my guy's whack the F**King bar on anything they can find. I actually keep a spare swivel and spare bar with me all the time, and i have 4 surface cleaners.

If you need new bearings they charge about $90.00, your lucky if this is the first time...

Nick or anyone that knows, I have taken the swivel apart somewhat. The diagram online says inside the casing there is a spring loaded seat with an o ring at the bottom of it and washer and a spring below that. I can't make head or tails of it. Can you give me some pointers? The pics are as far as I have gotten.

I just take mine over to Ameritec in tampa and they take care of it for me. I pretty much do all my own maintenance but i dont mess with the swivels because it is not a big exspence.

Glad to see someone else goes through spinner bars often Nick. We have been through 4 since Jan. The best thing in the world it a 1/4 mpt tap sold at lowes. We usually will tap them once if the tips get ripped out then after that its a good mixer for caustic

I have 2 in my truck that are tapped for a back-up and 1 new bar also..S**T happens, Alway's!!!

There's another ring to come out of the housing, then you'll see the mating surface for the shaft you've already got out. You have to get ahold of it and pull it out of the housing. Under that is a spring, and on the piece you just pulled out there's probably a shredded o ring. Replace that o ring, put a smear of silicone grease on it, and put it back in. Make sure the notches line up with the pins when it goes down in the hole. Put the rest back together, and go back to work.

Thanks everybody!!!!!
Your Welcome Spencer! Ohh,,,wait,,,I didn't do anything...Hahaha! Sooo, did ya get her up and spinning again yet? I've had it happen to me a few times... Thats why I have 3... Back-ups for back-ups! Good luck with it Spence. :)

The Deublin Swivels can be rebuilt.

The Brass Swivels from Steel Eagle are like throw-aways, they do offer the Talon-1 to replace that Brass swivel and it is a lot better design and quality.

You can replace the Deublin, Whirl-A-Way, Whisper Wash, Mosmatic and some others with the Talon-2 swivel, you just tell them which one you have now and right now the price is still only $180.00 but will be going up.

I ordered one but got my Big Guy swivel to work again and will be replacing that swivel or the one on the Classic next time they go out.

You can get the Whisper Wash bearing kit (2 bearings for around $40.00) and the seal kit for around $40.00 from Bob at Pressure Tek. I got the bearings locally and paid $40.00 each so get them from Bob, not local unless you are in Florida or are friends with a bearing supplier.

You need a good, large bench vice or a press to press off the bearings and press on the new bearings.

If the shaft is not very, very smooth, go ahead and replace it.

OR..................................

Buy the Talon-2 for $180.00 and just change it out in less than 10 minutes and be up and running quick.

What's up Larry? Did you ever hear from that guy? Hey is whisper wash over there by you somewhere? Have you ever been there?

Spencer, Sorry buddy, I guess I missed your post. I just saw it as I was cruisin through an older thread.

Yes Whisper Washer is right by me about 5 minutes away from my house. I'm assuming your talking about the painter who had put a bid in to do some painting for a School. No,, he never called me back. By the sounds of it he may not have gotten the job. He sounded, How do I say this nicely,,, A bit out of it when I talked to him...

Thank You Scott, there was a lots of first for me on that one. I enjoyed making it and I love the mechanics behind the equipment, dont get me wrong, I have a lot to learn.

Hope the Trinidad accent was not to thick :).

Hey guys here is a video I just made of the internals of a failed BE High Speed Swivel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ47IRc9MQs

Tony or anyone I dont know how to embed it sorry.

Guys post some other types if possible. I would like to see why the others are better.</EMBED>

I think one change that could be made in the BE swivel design is that the rotating face of the mechanical seal should be removable from the shaft. (its current design you would have to change the shaft to replace the rotating face, that would mean removing the bearings too). Its not the best thing to only change one face of a mechanical seal.

Anyone run their surface cleaners with an in-line high pressure filter?

Great video, thanks!
