learning the hard way

I feel embarased to write this, but I need your help to learn. I washed a tile roof today and had to use pressure to clean it. It had lotys of moss and algae. I even used straight 12% let it sit for a half hour and it still wouldnt work. What am I doing wrong?

If it was below 70 degrees the chems do not work that good down here where I am.

Your chems were probably old or weak or both. Next time you buy them get a CofA so you know when it was put into the container, it usually will not say on the container.

Your best bet is to go with someone for some labor for learning if anyone close to you does roofs. I am not sure about Canada but there are guys up in the Northern states that are doing roofs.

Are you flooding the roof or misting it? That will be a part of the problem if you are flooding it.

I havent found anyone doing no pressure roofs down hear, thats why im trying to corner the market. The chems were new in the conatainer, but I dont know when they were packaged. I sprayed the chem on directly with soap.

That is the key, sometimes they will try to sell you old chemicals. Some chemicals like degreaser will last many years but some acids are best used within a year or less.

Bleach has a short life no matter what the salesmen or anyone else tells you, don't be gullible and fall for their B.S. There is a report done showing the shelf life of bleach but in the Real Working World, it might be good for washing clothes but not for what we do.

When buying 55'ers tell them that you want a CofA (Certificate of Analysis) and that will show when they received the product or when the 55'ers were packaged. The gallon jugs at the store.......good luck using those, no real way to tell when they were packaged or how old they are.

Go get you a gallon of ultra clorox and mix it up with some soap and pour it on straight. The roof should do something, probably foam a little. If it doesn't then maybe it is a different type shingle.Scott d talked about one that took a Sh#tload of bleach to wash it may be thats the case. The reason for the clorox is they rotate their stock and ultra should be about 7% or so.

I have only dealt with thick moss a couple times, its a whole different animal than just a black stained roof. I too had to use pressure. The 12% will posibly turn the moss white, but if its THICK pressure or some kind of scaping is needed. You need to talk to the guys in the upper north west & upper northeast they deal with this stuff
Good luck
