Russell,
Why can't you use Extreme solutions Citrallic Brightner/Neutralizer on CCA Pressure treated wood?
What Brightner/Neutralizer do you recommend for this type of wood after its been stripped???

I just purchased your stripper HD-80 and Citrallic Brightner/Neutralizer From Beth/See Dirt Run and I am looking forward to trying these products and seeing the great results I've been hearing/reading about. That is why I am asking you this question concerning CCA Pressure Treated Wood.

Thanks

CCA & Acid

John-

Some of our research has shown that it is "possible" that the acid in the Citrallic product (and any other acid based brightener) could hasten the release of arsenic from the CCA treated lumber.

It is our policy to err on the side of caution so until we can prove, through further testing, that it is safe to use on the CCA wood our recommendation is not use it on CCA wood.

If you have to strip CCA wood with the HD-80 we suggest that you rinse really well then apply a light application of EFC-38 and allow it to dwell at least 15 min and then rinse lightly. This process will add a little time to your project so you may want to consider adjusting your pricing to cover the extra 15-20 minutes.

Our basic goal is to end up with as close to a neutral pH after cleaning as possible. The HD-80 is going to raise the pH of the wood to about 14. A light application of the EFC-38 will drop the pH to well below 10 (7 being neutral). The peroxides in the EFC-38 will brighten the wood with a dwell time of 15 min. This process has been tested and works well.

My personal belief (not that of Extreme Solutions, Inc. or R. W. Anderson, Inc.) is that the Arsenic scare has been blown out of proportion when it comes to the acid based cleaner/brighteners. Keeping our goal of neutral pH in mind it follows that the solution of acid used to neutralize is not actually strong enough to take the pH below 6.5 - 7. At this pH chemical release of the arsenic is not happening. This can be tested by simply sampling the runoff with litmus paper. The key is to not over mix or over apply the acid.

The caustics in the HD-80 are highly water soluble which means the vast majority will be rinsed free from the surface. By nature, the HD-80 was designed to get "into" the wood to accelerate the stripping process so there will be some residual caustics in the wood after cleaning. The amount (and strength) of acid needed to neutralize is minimal. For example if HD-80 is used full strength (8 dry oz/gallon) after rinsing the solution of Citrallic needed to convert the caustics to neutral salts is only 2 dry oz/gallon. If this process is followed there should be no free acids left to work on the arsenic.

We will continue intensive testing thorough the year (and as long as it takes) to conclusively determine the risk associated with using acids on CCA wood. I recommend that anyone who is interested run their own tests. Simply testing the pH of your runoff water will tell you a lot. I can put together some test kits for anyone who wants them. There would be a minimal charge to cover expenses. Just a guess. . .I would think $10.00 would provide you with material to run several tests.

Great!

Hey Jon-

You better keep your finger out of that stuff or you'll be picking your nose with a nub! :)

I'm glad to hear that the HD-80 is working for you! I hope you have a VERY prosperous year!

Best of Luck

Russ

I just finished stripping a deck with that Behr solid crap. Temp was in the low 50's and let it dwell for about 20 minutes. It peels off. Can't wait to see how it does on the really tuff stuff, CWF-UV.

Burrrrrr!

Reed-

I'm glad to hear that the HD-80 worked out for you! If you liked the way it worked on that job, you should be really pleased when the temp starts to rise.

You will see the HD-80 working much faster when it's warmer.

Hope you have a GREAT season!

Best of Luck

Russ
