Internet Speed Question

Hello People, I have DSL and have a question. I have bought things on the internet in the past few months and have not been able to download the files (1mb to several hundred mb in size). Not sure why the speed starts at about 200kb/sec. then slows down and finally stops each and every time.

I have spent a lot of time with the AT&T DSL people and had the speed checks done and everything checks out. Nobody knows why the speed sloows down and stops. I have run the antivirus and spyware programs but still no answer.

I am running Windows XP with a machine that is about 4 years old with plenty of memory.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank You.

Chris if it's a laptop w/WiFi then go to a coffee shop somewhere that has the service or go to a friends and see if things change...

I had some email download problems and it was my AVG scanning everything over and over. I shut that off and no problem. I'm sure you've checked your task manager when it's going on to see what is running. I've had luck just Googling different phrases describing the problem. There's usually some IT forum that has an answer.

Not high jacking just another PC issue.
Does anyone else have problems with the NCE video livestream running at the top this forum? I have to back out of here or shut it off or it will lock up or crash my browser if I leave it open for a while. I use Firefox.

If you are using 2 or more programs for your anti-virus, firewall, or spy-ware, you will notice a significant depreciation in your speed while online.

Personally, I use stop sign, http://www.stopsign.com/. It is only $49 per year and includes 2 computers. You can add on an unlimited number of computers to your account for just $12 each per year, prorated monthly.

My tech support is included in this and I get all of the applications needed to keep my computer running at top speed.

I just got one of those warning letters from Cox for downloading a song from an artist I've never heard of. I politely told them to shove it, the reasearched a little and found that some ISP's are now slowing down they system if a trigger in it thinks you are going to be downloading a lot. Has anybody heard of this?

Tony, Cox had put that into place about a year ago, they will limit your speeds and limit the amount of info you can grab a month. But I don't think you are hitting their limits they has set in their policies, you have to be grabbing movies and big files, But who know right now what or if they have changed it again. Check your connection speeds from an on line speed meter and then if it is not what you are paying for call and bitch that you are not getting what you are paying for. I have done this a couple times, they cut you back thinking your not looking or something.

It is my desktop.

I might take the large laptop to a place with wifi and see if it will download, if it does then I will be switching the internet provider soon.

****New Question**** If I do switch internet providers, will I have to email everyone that sends me emails, the newsgroups I am a member of and other organizations that I am a member of my new email address or do most companies have a forwarding system or can you keep your old email address????

Thanks.

I do have AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy on the Desktop but not on my laptop. When trying to download with my laptop, it does the same thing, just slows down and stops every time.

I will try going to the Starbucks or other place with the wifi and see what happens there.

Your not the only one. several besides myself have mentioned it. Ron says he is keeping it up till MB

I did a search for a while on the internet thing on a site called Yahoo or something like that. It came up with a lot of sites about problems so I read for a long while and found the problem.

Not sure if it was a virus or something else that changed some settings that I never heard of but got things working somewhat better now.

Hopefully they will stay good.
