Problems landing jobs

The thread is titled landing job. Are you referring to closing the jobs or actually getting the leads?

Answer this for me so I can better answer your question.

How's it been DJ. Well, it's a little of both. Residential : as far as the face to face door to door method I'm going to apply. Commercial: here's a scenario I was in yesterday.

I was at an IHOP and I noticed that the outside seating area conrete was in pretty bad shape. Gum, oil staining, overall dirty. So I asked the waitress, hey do you know the manager's name. She told me and was personable towards me, so I said thank you and continued to order my food. As we were waiting for our food, I asked if I could have a moment to speak to the operation's manager about my food, to make sure she came to the table to serve a customer(me) I then layed it on her. Told her what needed to be done and I offered to answer any questions she might have. Then I offered her a quote. The manager then said that she was busy and I could tell that she was blowing me off and was quite rude about it. And it wasn't the fact that I was not speaking in a distasteful or condescending, demanding way. The waitress had given me a head's up about the manager that she can be a real ***** even before I had the conversation with the manager. My wife concurred that she was rather ill-mannered with me, even though I was a paying customer.

My problem was I wasn't sure how to take the bull by the horns on that particular scenario and close the deal.

What do you guys think?

Mike, sometimes translation and interpretations of posts on the net can be muddled and taken the wrong way. If this is what I have done, then I apologize.

I re-read your post 20 times, if you say you meant nothing, then I take your word for it.

Thanks Guy....you are right. I have re-read it 20 times as well and can't see it. Regardless...all is well.

Ryan, three months ago I couldn't beg a job.
Today, I'm swamped.
Sometimes I think it just happens. Especially in smaller cities.

I'm with Nicole...

Here is what I would do (probably) if I had a stencil. I would have a catchy headline on mine, not just your company name and number like most people have, for one. But I would break out the surface cleaner, fire up the pw, and let the customer run it over the stencil.

There is NOTHING that works better than getting the potential customer involved. Then, letting them see the results. I think that would work like a charm.

With residentail I always tried the cheaper route, small neighborhood newsletters, $15 - $50 a month or quarter. Nothing real fancy post cards and hit entire neighborhoods, once I got a few jobs, I would have yard signs, then more postcards

I ALWAYS ALWAYS would ask residential customers to tell family, friends and neighbors about us. Many people like helping. I had many call with all kinds of leads, set up 4, 5, 6 other houses to do when I did theirs. Asking really does work

You don't always have to have the fancy fliers and postcards, you don't want junk, but a flier done on your computer and passed out to 50, 100 houses can get you jobs, just make sure grammer, spelling is right, I always have my wife proof the stuff

Not sure how long you have been in biz,but around the 3rd year is when you really start seeing referrals, repeat work paying off. Its not always easy, if it was everyone would have a business, the strong and determined are the ones that can make a nice living. Go for it, live it and breathe it, you will get there
