What are your most common employee issues?

I just interviewed a guy to be a part time helper and he was telling me he had his own business here in Deltona and he misses pressure washing. He also made the comment that he was just on the roof of a home he did 3 years ago. Im getting the feeling he is a competitor looking to steal customers or trying to get his business going again. My gut is telling me NO hire. Any opinions.

He sounds too ambitious to me to be your helper!
The minute he cops an attitude against you, he will use that as an excuse to rip you off/steal your customers.
Follow your Gut Instinct brother, and keep looking for a better helper, one who will follow orders, not tell you "how he used to do it".

Have him sign a 3 year non-compete (within a 500 mile radius). He ever goes back to pressure washing, you can nail him.

If he refuses, then your suspicions are probably correct and you now have a way out of the situation.

A non compete is not worth the paper it is written on. I have an employment attorney that told me the same. Since he is the best in the state, I will take his word for it. I don't hire former wash business owners, handymen, or anyone in construction trades. I have not had really good luck with any of them.

Hey Red, I guess im not gonna hire you either.

You are best to hire newbies and train them rigorously, the way you want them to work, act and appear! If they have power washed before or are the type who have done it all and know it all, they are most likely going to be hard to train your way with your business system.

Im interviewing another guy this evening. I do not want to hire even part time guys that had their own business

Don't know the ins & outs of a non-compete agreement, but I'll bet the other guy doesn't either and won't want to even try.

Oh, and trust me, I ain't driving all the way through O' Town to make a measly 100 bucks.

Ha Ha, we should hook up for some roof cleaning.

I actually found my helper when I was in line at the supermarket with my wife one day. An 18 year old kid bagging our groceries for us knew what I did and who I was (my truck stands out like a sore thumb) and he gave me his number if I ever needed a helper for a day or even a few hours. 4 years later he still is the best helper I've had and is still with me.

Seems to me your truck stands out like a 'MONEY MAKER'.

Non competes do work. This is not a guess it's a fact. If it's written too (by your attorney) stringent judge will show leniency toward defendant. Example, if amount of time before they can perform that particular service (pressure washing) is to long or work area that you have forbidden him to work in is too large.

With that being said if your gut is strongly telling you no then it's a no.

I do hire guys with experience often. They save me money in the training process and become earners much quicker. I believe that you have to make it worth while for them not to think about leaving. I have found that the best way to do this is by the amount your employees make. I had lots of turnover in the first 5 years do to the fact I was hiring guys that were willing to work for $10/hour. After I convinced myself to hire more competent employees and pay them good money, my business ran sooooo much smoother!

Has anyone upheld a bon compete in our business? I would like to see the court order.

I agree they can be a deterrent, but having sold franchises for a few years in the nineties I can tell you for certain that the burden of proof is o. YOU and in four cases of complete violation we never won a case. It either cost too much to justify the expense or was shut down on a technicality. And this was a company with a $200k annual legal budget.

I would just like to see a power washer case that has been won. Then I would like a copy of your non compete for my records. Lol

If you sell a biz a non compete works. Legally they don't mean much to Arizona judges unless they steal intellectual property or customer info on the clock. Then use it. In this case you don't need a non compete. Just a good at tourney to prove they stole it.
