Florida Sales Tax

I had issues with this just over a year ago - ended up registering for sales tax after speaking with a representative from FDOR. But upon further investigation and conversation with another FDOR representative, I found out the pressure washing is not a taxable service. Wrote a letter to FDOR explaining the situation and haven't had any problems since.

I charged and paid sales tax for about 2 years until I went in to pay a late charge and complain. The lady looked at me and said "why are you charging tax? This isnt a taxable service, it is improvement of real property" then she deleted my tax number and I havnt paid it since. If you dont get the answer from one rep, ask another.

Florida tried a sales tax on service businesses under Governer Bob Martinez in the late 1980's and it was repealed 2 years later. In Florida we have no sales tax on services. However the point was made about improving a property. In that case you will probably have to pay sales tax on the goods that end up being resold as part of the service. IE the wood you used to repair the fence would be taxable if you are a handy man, but only if you bought it wholesale. If you paid taxes on it when you purchased it then you should be ok.
