Has anyone tried hand written addressed envelopes for direct mail?

What about this...

To keep from having to hand write the entire letter. Print it from the computer like normal. Maybe to entice them to read it hand write a short note on a colorful post it and put it in the envelope with the letter?

"Hey, thought you might want to check this out! -Chris"

Maybe something like that? Of course the letter would still have to be good!

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest to write the whole letter by hand. What I've done is typed the letter up, but always open the letter up with their names. You wouldn't have to do this, but I think it sounds better then "Dear Homeowner,".

I signed each letter at the bottom under my name.

The letter needs to be friendly but not overly casual. It needs to say who you are (you need to include you're local, if you are - if they think this letter is from a contractor 100 miles away, you're probably not going to get very far), and clearly define the benefits they receive by using your service. Last but not least, it needs to offer a special or discount with a call to action.

Using a highlighter to point out the special offer and call to action (even if it's the highlighter feature on the computer works - but then you have to print using a color printer.. ) is a great way of getting their attention too.

p.s. make sure you have 3 smart people proof (beginning to think Allison Hester would be good at this!) read the letter. Infact, I probably needed somebody to proof read this post...

We do about 150 pieces a month to potential commercial flat work clients. Sydney hand writes all of the addresses out. We use colored envelopes with a contrasting ink color. She then stuffs the 4x6 full color double sided post card in the envelope with a post it note attached to it that says "We have a maintenance package for EVERY budget - give us a call" Get's a stamp, not a plain Jaine 44cent one either. We do characters some times other times trains lol i let her pick them out. Some times if it is a client we really want to land we will put some stickers on the out side as well. We make it very visible. In our third month of doing this and have picked up just over $4,500 a year worth of accounts. So we are right at that 25% mark which is where I need my direct mail to be at.

Yea that is a good idea too. I was thinking of hand addressing just the envelope only, with blue ink of course. Then putting a return address sticker on it with our info and using a real stamp.

As for the letter I was just planning on typing one up and printing it off the computer a thousand times and using that. But now that you mention it I could write one hand written letter and scan it into our scanner then print it from our printer a thousand times and it would look much more like a hand written letter. I could even sign the bottom of the letter with a real pen using blue ink.

I think I'm gonna send some out here pretty soon.

If anyone else is sending something similar out post your results and what hand written/printed combo you used to get your results.

Thanks
Ryan

Great thread, great info. I always tried to make our mailings hand addressed. It made a considerable difference head to head against printed labels.

A growing number of marketers are using real handwriting when they send out mailings like holiday greeting cards, thank you cards, product announcements, prospecting letters, and fundraising requests for donations. It is the best method to get attention.

I allways thought the calender with girls with big boobs in bikinis worked well.
Seems to have worked well for Snap on for the last 33 years.
