Anyone have problems browsing and found a solution?

I am having a problem browsing this forum and a few others on my laptop computer and my desktop.

Right now I am in Milwaukee with my mini HP laptop and I am browsing faster than if I was using my other 2 computers so I am sure that the problem is on my other 2 computers.

I am wondering what could be the issue?

I have deleted history, cookies, ran anti-virus, checked settings, etc... but I cannot get my other 2 computers to surf fast.

Has anyone had similar issues with their computer and found a solution or figured out what was wrong with their computer?

Thanks for any help.

I know that the ram on the HP mini is less than the laptop but probably less than the older desktop.

I tried adjusting the available memory and set it to the setting that it recommends but no changes, not sure what else to try.

Back home I have DSL, here at the hotel I am not sure but it really seems many times faster on this site and others and general surfing.

I have heard that the cable internet is a lot faster but have not got it at my house, maybe later this year or next year after my contract runs out.

Check your browser add-ons. Add-ons such as yahoo, google, windows live, etc... can slow a browser down. Go to Tools>Manage Add-ons, see what all is on your machine and whats enabled. Click on the Add-on you want to disable and click the "Disable Button", you'll have to close the browser and re-open it for the changes to take effect.

I like to get rid of all the extra crap that gets installed over time. I've never found any software that will make a computer run faster, its all about the physical machine, "Processor, Ram, Bus, Graphics card". But I have seen a ton of stuff that will slow one down to a crawl.

Anti-virus software is one of the worst. Products like Norton and McAfee are VERY resource intensive, they have a large foot print when installed on your system and can slow it way down. "They like to control everything you do!" There are lighter and less resource intensive products on the market like Kaspersky that have a smaller foot print on your system. I'm not trying to sell anyone on any one product, I'm just stating the facts. All I use personally is the free AVG software. But I also limit where I go online and who else uses my machine.

You might want to try scanning for malware on your machine, here is a free malware software that has worked well for me in the past...

If you look at the lower right hand corner of your screen you should find your "Active icons", the more of these you have running at one time the slower your machine is going to run. If you've got a lot of those little icons down there in the notification area of your taskbar than you should re-think what all you've got installed on your computer. Each one is using up some system resources in order to run.

System maintenance should be as easy as removing what you don't want and running Disk Clean-up and defraging the hard drive.

Adding and removing programs from your computer should be done by an experienced technician, This is just my own opinion and I can not be held liable for anyone else's actions or damage that might happen to your computer if you try this on your own.

Thanks for the info, I will look at this when I get back home.

Are you running on a wireless network? I was talking to an IT guy who recommends the Linksys E2000 for a quicker connection. Apparently the more electronics you have running off of it the slower it goes. He says that this one is pretty powerful.

Something to look at as well.

I believe that the wireless router is Linksys that runs off the signal from the desktop computer and the wireless signal is usually only with my laptop but sometimes with my son's desktop or laptop when he is at the house, his computers are not on all the time.

Thanks.

My big laptop crashed (the motherboard) and my desktop crashed (the hard drive) so until a couple days ago I was getting by with my son's laptop computer, now I got the desktop back.

Here is the interesting thing. My friend who fixed the computer said to leave the antivirus off, just don't download anything or go to any sites you are not sure of and the computer will be very fast.

I am using the desktop and it has never been this fast browsing, watching youtube videos, reading email, etc.... It is really very fast!

I was about to get Time Warner RoadRunner cable internet so things would be fast but now I will wait until the DSL contract is up next year before switching as the internet speed is good.

On my son's laptop with the Norton antivirus, it is very slow and locks up a lot, it is all due to the antivirus software like my friend said it would be.

It is a shame that my hard drive crashed, I lost a lot of important files. I have an external hard drive that I will be saving everything onto and will buy another so I will keep duplicates of everything in case one of those hard drive crashes, I will still have a backup of everything.

CHris, I have abuddy over hee that owns a computer repair shop. My hard drive crashed not long ago and he was able to save ALL my documents, pic's everything. Not sure if there are different degrees of a hard drive crashing, but this guy is really good.

Hey Christopher, you might look into one of these "cloud services" to save backups. They are really very cheap per gigabyte per month and there is no hardware for you to worry about.

This guy is pretty good and he told me that if we send the hard drive off to a place to try to recover everything, it would be over $1000, I don't want to spend that much. I will just live with it, as there is no guarantee with that kind of service.

I have been thinking about that cloud thing, just don't know how to get in touch with them.

There is also the other site that says it is about $59 per year, just forgot the name of it.

Chris, Carbonite has been recommended a lot. I'm going to check into it.

That is the one I was thinking about, Carbonite. Thanks.

Doug, on second thought, pm me the info for your computer guy, I would like to call him and ask a few questions. Maybe some more stuff could be found if it is not too expensive.

Thanks.

I'd suggest using AVG antivirus. It's free, runs stable, and hasn't slowed down any of my computers.

If you're computer is connected to the internet you really need to have a good antivirus software on it... just going to sites you think are safe and not downloading files won't protect you.

Also consider dropbox. It's a cloud based service that gives you free file storage (2GB is free) that you can access from any computer or smartphone. Box.net is another service, they are running a special - 50GB for free.
