Book of the week

Tony Shelton

BS Detector, Esquire
Instead of posting individually about books I've recently added to the pile of filed info in my brain I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to books recommended by contractors.

So far this year I've got:

Decision Points by George Bush - Good book, offers insight into the way he thinks.

My Life by Bill Clinton - Couldn't make it through it. Comes off as self centered and WAAAAAY to long on subjects. I recommend it if you have problems sleeping.

Something That will Surprise The World: The Essential Writings of the Founding Fathers - Great book shows what the founding fathers were actually discussing between themselves as they founded a new nation based on letters and notes between them. I recommend it if you are a democrat or if you are a republican who thinks "compromise" is the way it's always been.

Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The case against an out of control Government -
Almost cartoon bookish, even the most ADHD mind can grasp these concepts. It's a fast read with a lot of good simple information. Recommended for everyone for a quick easy read.

Sam Walton Made in America - A MUST READ for any entrepreneur. It's a good book the keeps your attention all the way through. HIGHLY recommended.

Flights of Angels - Supposed true stories of people who have had encounters with angelic beings in modern times. Lame. A wast of a couple of hours.

Currently reading:

The Case for the Real Jesus by Lee Strobel - Very, Very good. I'm not usually a Strobel fan, but this book is outstanding in it's academic study of the evidence for and against Jesus as God's Son. I'd recommend it for everyone. Everyone can make their own choices, but it's easier to make a choice when evidence is presented from all sides.

Delivering Happiness by Tony Hseih - The CEO of Zappos - I just started this one but it looks good so far. Zappos is one of the largest online retailers in the world. We took Fayth on a tour of their offices for home schooling and we were surprised that there were CEO's from all over the country taking the tour with us. They offer tours daily and 12 people from all over were there taking the tour with us that day. I'll update more on this book later, along with their "Culture Book" which is a compilation of paragraphs from their employees commenting on their experiences working at Zappos.

If you've found something good add it here!

Just started "Decision Points" pretty good so far. The "Founding Fathers.." book looks interesting. I'll have to look into that one. And I try not to read comedies, so I will probably stay away from the Glenn Beck book.

Rich Dad Poor Dad is also great for entrepreneur's. Never completed it yet.
Tony, do your books have a lot of pictures to help you? Sorry, but I had to go there!

I'm stepping outside the box lately and starting to become a non-lurker for a while!

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is already on my list. I had forgotten about it.

I won't be in Texas this time. I'm promised my family no more than two roundtables this year. We're will be in Phoenix and most likely Tampa.

I don't need pictures Tony. I read books like this :love2::

I only read what the Oprah's book club recomends.

Well, here is a nugget from the Sam Walton Book - page 226

I don't have any trouble understanding why some merchant who's having a hard time competing with us wouldn't be too happy about our being there. What I haven't been able to figure at all is these people who have decided we're somehow responsible for the decline of the small town. My guess is that a lot of these critics are folks who grew up in the small towns and then deserted them for the big cities decades ago. Now when they come home for a visit it makes them sad that the old town square isn't exactly like it was when they left it back in 1954. It's almost like they want their hometown to be stuck in time, an old fashioned place filled with old fashioned people doing business the old fashioned way.

Scott D, I just finished "The Case for the Real Jesus". It was an outstanding, amazingly simple study of a complex issue using leading scholars of today. I'll throw it in the mail and send it to you if you want it. If you like it, send it on to someone else, if you think it's bs throw it away. Let me know if you want it.

I read this one cover to cover once and a lot of it two times. While the label Bible may in my opinion be a stretch it certainly is a comprehensive guide to the specific marketing of a power washing business. The advertizing section is loaded with good info, very much worth 100x the price of the book.

Like a lot of business book / autobiographies Steve has a story to tell and good for him he got it down on paper. Aside from some of the personal set backs (understatement) it’s a one based on hard work and livening by your word. I have incorporated several nuggets from this book into my marketing.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. If you think you've ever faced adversity read this book and you'll realize life's a walk in the park.

Tony, I'm always open to new ideas. Id love to read it.

Chris H, I've read Lone survivor 3 times. One of my favorite books.
