Book of the week

I disagree with you Tony. The millionaire next door targets entrepreneurs, which all of us are, to one extent, or another. That being the case, being an entrepreneur means that just by starting your own business you are taking a risk.
The way I read it is that it said to be wise in how you spent your money, and not just spend it to have something new and shiny. That is why they do a lot of the Dave Ramsey stuff, where you buy as much as you can with cash, and do not necessarily have to buy new. Just my opinion.

I was just trying to contrast the philosophies behind the two books. In the millionaire next door the heroes were the passive investors who scrimp, save, spend wisely and invest in relatively safe investments. I don't consider that type of person an "entrepreneurial" type. Neither does Trump in the other book. I'll have to pull out the book and get some quotes showing that, while they aren't saying anything negative about the passive investor types, the "...Rich" book is not particularly for that type of person.

That's just what I got out of both books.

I love the statement that was made in this book about all hat and no cattle. People want to look rich and spend there money
on fancy cars, clothes, jewelry etc... And I am guilty of all of the above one time or another and I was always able to justify
Why I needed to stay at a fancy expensive hotel while vacationing ( after all you only get to do this maybe once a year)
And I should drive an expensive car because I work hard and deserve it. Right? Rolex watch. Yes I own one ( hardly wear it) great restaurants (living close to manhattan I have had many of expensive dinners, rollers with an expensive cigar.

But i am all hat and no cattle....in other words I have the look of a wealthy man but I don't really have the payroll to support
That life style. I have learned a lot from this book and it has opened my eyes wide open, it's hard to change all at once
But I do recognize now that it's time to get the cattle and then I can wear what ever the he'll hat I want!

My cattle that were materializing in 2007 ran off and now they've taken my hat. But I've got a small hat and am working on the cattle now. :)

I just finished "Founding Faith" by Steven Waldman. I didn't realize how much the early founding fathers played politics also by keeping their sentences vague to avoid attacks from opposing parties within their own ranks. They were pretty good at opening up against the British, but tried to appease all sides in many cases once the country was founded. It was interesting, but nothing to write home about. Get it from the library.

I'm almost done with "Good Stuff" by Jennifer Grant, Cary Grant's daughter. He is by far my favorite actor of all time and I just wanted to know more about him. He didn't have his daughter till he was 62 and immediately retired and spent most of his time with her. If only I could do the same. It's a good easy read. It's worth the few dollars to buy it and put on the shelf to remind you how much a little bit of time means to your children.

Funny quote from the book....... They asked one of his ex wives if he was gay......she replied "I don't know, we were usually too busy f&&%ing for me to stop and ask." HILARIOUS!

You are a cowboy too?

In the middle of Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" book. I like to hear both sides of any story whenever possible so I got "The Rogue" by Joe McGinness - the guy who moved in next door to her to write the book.

This book is a lesson in liberalism and faulty reporting techniques that needs to be studied.

As a private investigator I learned to look at all angles. I learned that unless you take in ALL the available information it is impossible to come to an honest conclusion. Any PI who consistently only comes back with negative reports always proves to be a liability to the agency in the end. The only way to come back with that much negative is to make it up or disregard anything to the contrary.

This book is a prime example of that. I've yet to find a single positive statement about Palin or her family in the entire book. There are a lot of nameless sources and a ton of complete contradictions and turnarounds where once she is a religious psycho who was a virgin till she met Todd, then later, when it fits his story better she was a slut. It's the craziest piece of work I've ever seen short of the PW@A's expose on Pro Power Wash.

Here is an excerpt. Underlined emphasis and red comments are mine:

The degree to which "hockey mom" Sarah involved herself in Track's playing career is a matter of debate. The New York Times reported in 2008 that she "would drive to the rinks at all hours, children in tow. She sometimes ran the scoreboard, let hocky players from other cities sleep on the floor of her home and got involved in the management of her eldest son's teams".
I don't find anyone in Wasilla who confirms this. Instead, I'm told by whom? that Track's biggest problem with regard to hockey was getting to the rink. "Track was always finding his own way", a team parent tells me. Really? Others Others? recall that it was not Sarah, but state trooper Mike Wooten, when he was married to Sarah's sister Molly, who would most often drop off and pick up Track. "I almost never saw Sarah at a game." Another parent says. What other parent? When Sarah did attend, spectators more nameless sources recall that she cheered loudest not for goals, but on those occasions when Track knocked an opposing player down and hit him repeatedly with his stick.
Does anyone with a mind actually believe this?

And that was just two paragraphs. It goes on and on.

It's easy to see that this man went in with a point to prove and proved it by interviewing a skewed cross section of people who didn't like Sarah for one reason or another. She is a rogue and lots of people don't like her for that. According to author, quite a few people who had crossed the Palins offered themselves up for interviews. Is that surprising? Do you think her friends an co-workers who are in agreement with her philosophy are going to open themselves up to the proven false interview and interpretation techniques of Joe McGinnis?

Not only were his proportions of interviewees off center, he threw out every positive thing about the Palins and only reported on the negative.

Like Shelly said this morning, someone is going to read that junk years from now and take is as gospel because they are unskilled in deciphering fraud.

When one is looking for the truth it helps to look at all angles.

For example, you can't determine the truth about a fellow contractor's business by asking the guys he bids against on a daily basis and taking their word as 100% truth. You can't ask questions that demand the answer you want, like, "How does it make you feel to know that Ron is bidding against you and he only has two rigs?" A faulty premise generates faulty results.

The publisher should have refused this book. It is one of the worst exposes I have ever read. I'm not saying Sarah Palin is a much better author. Hers is skewed in the opposite direction. But she is writing about herself and one should expect that. But NOT from a someone like Joe McGinnis. And NOT from an organization that promotes itself as being led by professionals at the top of our industry income wise.

Tried to get it on Google, but they don't have the ebook yet. I'm addicted to ebooks now that I have the tablet. It looks like a good book.

Try some reading from Og tony, you're a holy man. Great stuff.

The greatest Miricle in the world. Not sure if is available in e-form though.

Got this one in today. Used off amazon.

Wow, finally back to reading again. Just finished Paul Revere's ride two days ago.

A week or so after that last post I began having what my Dr. described as "Cluster Headaches" caused by whatever the stroke did to my brain a while back.

It lasted full on from the middle of November through a few days after Christmas. It was the most bizarre and frightening thing I have ever experienced.

The headaches were bad, but I have had vascular headaches since I was twelve and have learned to live with them. It was the cognitive symptoms that threw me for a loop.

Imagine this:

1) I would be driving to an account I've been to 100 times and would have to pull over and call Shelly to get turn by turn directions to get there because I forgot the way.
2) Driving up to a building I've been to 100 times and not being able to recognize it.
3) Talking on the phone with people and not only forgetting what we were talking about, but forgetting who I'm talking to. One time I just laid down the phone because I forgot I was even talking on it.
4) Not being able to read even one paragraph. No concentration at all.
5) I gained 25 lbs back eating too much and to often trying to ward off the headache pain. Eating a little bit would postpone the pain temporarily and I fell into the trap of doing that instead of taking pills for the pain. I just can't stand having to take anything on a regular basis.

Then, around December 27 it just turned off like a switch. Memory problems were gone, concentration problems gone, etc.

It was during that time that the UAMCC BOD elections were going on and I was unable to present myself properly and missed out on any really valuable input. I tried and I did post some during that time, but, posting was laborious and just a few paragraphs took as long as hours to put together in small pieces.

I missed out on a lot of Christmas family conversations. I didn't want to talk to anybody on the phone. I was embarrassed at my inability to concentrate.

The scariest thing of all was all this was undiagnosed and I couldn't get an appointment till January. I just got my MRI this week and won't know any results till next week. I thought I had another stroke, but my Dr. (who is a genius) says it's cluster headaches that will come on around the same time every year like clockwork with the exact same cognitive symptoms. But next year she plans to medicate me at the onset and reduce that month and a half of problems down to a couple or three days. I hope it works.

So I'm finally back to normal and reading two to five books at once whenever I have time.

The Paul Revere book was OUTSTANDING and I recommend it to every American. It puts a human face on the American Revolution. Every family should read it.

Just finished "The Biblical Trustee Family" by Andrea Schwartz.

Here is an excerpt in regards to Daniel's defiance of the King's decree that no one pray to any gods except the one he specified for a period of 30 days -

"If you think about it, they were asking something far less than what is demanded in our modern statist school system. Daniel's enemies were asking for a moratorium on Daniel praying for thirty days. Just thirty days. What is required of Christians who send their children to state schools has no cutoff date-- they are forbidden to vocally honor their Lord and Saviour for ten months out of the year, Monday through Friday from eight o'clock until three o'clock daily. Additionally, if they play sports, they are prohibited, in many cases, from asking God's blessings for safety during a sporting event. When a Christian student attains the highest honors because of academic achievement, he is denied the right to acknowledge and credit his Lord and Savior for that success. Most parents of Christian children in public schools accept this silencing without question for the twelve years their Christian children attend statist schools. If they possessed even a mustard see of wisdom they would remove their children from this horrible predicament and fulfill God's requirements regarding the nurture and admonition of their children.

This book made me look at the indoctrination of our children from a different angle. It's a pretty good book. But if you are easily offended by hard truths slapping you in the face I wouldn't recommend it. There are some things in the book I disagree with also. But, the author doesn't come across as one who is forcing her beliefs on anything other than the essentials on others. She has some beliefs that are unique and she has raised her family based on those beliefs.

I just was introduced to R.J. Rushdoony. Many of his books are free online. I bought about 5 of his books at a seminar last month and am just starting on "Law & Liberty."

To me Rushdoony is what Ron Paul would be if Ron Paul based all his stances on the revealed will of God instead of just on the constitution. For instance, if Ron Paul made the stance that "God hates the killing of the unborn, therefore if I were president I would outlaw abortion via executive order".....then Ron would be like Rushdoony.

None of the other candidates are worth anything. We can start from a long time ago, as far back as I remember, from Nixon to Ford to Carter to a brief blip of hope with Reagan, to Bush 1, Clinton, Bush2 and now the Abomination and our history could read a lot like the books of Kings:

  • 1 Kings 14:22
Judah did evil in the eyes of the LORD. By the sins they committed they stirred up his jealous anger more than those who were before them had done.
  • 1 Kings 15:26
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.
  • 1 Kings 15:34
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit
  • 1 Kings 16:25
But Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD and sinned more than all those before him.
1 Kings 16:24-26 (in Context) 1 Kings 16 (Whole Chapter)
  • 1 Kings 16:30
Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him.
1 Kings 16:29-31 (in Context) 1 Kings 16 (Whole Chapter)
  • 1 Kings 22:52
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.
  • 2 Kings 3:2
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid ofthe sacred stone of Baal that his father had made.
  • 2 Kings 8:18
He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD
  • 2 Kings 13:2
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them.
  • 2 Kings 13:11

  • 2 Kings 15:9
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, as his predecessors had done. He did not turn away fromthe sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.
And it goes on and on. There were few times when the leaders of Israel had the guts to stand up for the Lord and do what was unpopular and politically "incorrect" and get rid of the evil "within the camp".

We haven't had a leader in my lifetime who was willing to do that. And none of the presidential candidates who have a chance to win the election will either. Oh well, maybe in 2016.

It has been a couple of years and my cognitive issues are behind me.

Found this old thread and thought it was time to start posting some good books.

Been spending the last month reading court cases and legal documents for the Bundy case. But I discovered this series called THE GREAT COURSES.

Just finished "The other side of History" about the day to day lives of regular people throughout history. It just confirmed that history repeats itself.

It was amazing to me to find out the modern conveniences the Romans and Egyptians enjoyed vs the Celts who lived much later.

My eyesight isn't as good after the caustic mishap so I joined Audible.

Just started this one today. Sounds promising so far.

Thank the Lord those days of medical issues are in the rear view mirror. But, technology has taken over and 90 % of my reading is audiobooks. Thank goodness for the 1.5x and higher speed settings. Sounds like Donald Duck, but at least you can get through a book in decent time.
