Seriously what are Associations , Organization suppose to do?

In my opinion, any group should work for the betterment of the membership. This includes: education, member benefits, lobby local state and federal governments, provide seminars for networking and education, and be an outlet for the membership to express concerns or problems that are beyond what an individual can solve, so the group can all pull together and try to resolve the issue. So kinda like Tony said only with more words.

Networking for education for profit-ability. ..with reduced liability

Education, networking, education,
networking,
..did I mention education ??
..not just the big stuff..
EVERYthing in-between..
Look at you own business..
the details either make you, or break you..
Every day, there is something you need to fix or replace "right NOW"..
literally, or spiritually.
An entrepreneur needs to be GOOD at overcoming larger and larger obstacles,
But the net result of climbing with better tools,
is an easier, faster path to a "turn-key" operation.

When I entered the industry 10 years ago.. I kinda after a bit hunted around and looked at what was out there and I thought, they should be doing more.. I actually couldn't even figure out what they did do.

But I guess they should:

1) put more $ in the contractors pockets.
2) be constantly working toward bettering the industry ---> end result putting more money in the contractors pocket.
3) educate the members on safety practices, and steer the industry towards a safety standard.

I beleive all orgs should be avoided until they shrivel up and die away. Education of other contractors should be the bane of every contractor. Target does not share marketing ideas with Walmart, they want them to go out of business so they do not have to compete against them. We do not need orgs that are in bed with vendors or push agendas that are not beneficial to contractors. Think about the org out there now that has a board member that is an owner in a company that sells reclaim and pressure washing equipment. We do not need any orgs.

I see this side Willaim , I really do. Actually realized this very thing has been bread into the current org.

Vendors controlling things never will work.

Thanks chris, pretty simple hey!!

Well, all I can say is that we joined WCRA and have received more benefit as a one week member than we have with all of the years combined in pressure washing associations.

If you have faith in growing technology

the job well done gets noticed. Eh?
..and it goes both ways.

Education is opening new doors for cleaning profitably.
If you have faith in growing technology, you can stay on the leading-edge of your market..

If an association works together,

we have a "sustainable relationship".
..and an easier climb out of a recession. :)

I hope that didn't sound corny guys.. seriously.

I have seen "cooperative community" run an organization outside of this industry many times.
I have faith in it..
Let's focus on doing the first thing first, and muscle-through the hard parts, 'til it's Right.
We've all seen mistakes.. and we don't have time to wallow-in them.

No intention of making mistakes, nothing sounds to corny at this point.

What does any association do? What are they suppose to stand For?

Please no Bashing anyone here.

I'm looking for real answers of what in your eyes associations are suppose to do?

These are in no particular order:

1) Establish a code of conduct and ethical standards for ALL members
2) Establish a Mission Statement and do not deviate from it
3) Establish a set of benefits it's members will receive for joining the association or organization and live up to those benefits.
4) Decide on who your target membership audience will be and eliminate any conflicts of interest
5) Educate and Represent your membership with the highest ethical standards
6) Educate and Represent (when asked) your membership in all things pertaining to the industry to which your association or organization is a part of.
7) LISTEN, LISTEN, and LISTEN some more to your membership and HELP THEM
8) Be a positive influence on the industry you represent and work to be at the forefront of industry changes
10) COMMUNICATE frequently and often with your membership what you are working on, what you see happening in the future and solicit membership help, ideas, opinions.

I am not currently a member of any org or association, these are just some of the things I would think any org or association should do.

Great Post Doug

I second that !.. spot-on Doug.
..item #7 is the "prime directive". Eh?

item 6 could be the title of the mission statement.
