Ready Seal and Redwood???

I've heard so many good things about Ready Seal I thought I'd give it a try.

I called a Ready Seal rep. and told him I am new to deck sealing and heard a lot of good things about Ready Seal. I told the rep. I needed sealer for redwood decks. I requested some of their Redwood Sealer. He informed me that the Redwood Sealer did not comply with California's air quality laws so he suggested some of their other sealers. I said OK and ordered Lt Brown. Today my order arrived and on the side of the Sealer container it says "Do Not Apply To Redwood". Also, in a pamphlet that was included with the order describing Ready Seal it states under item 13. "Do not use READY SEAL on redwood."

At this point I don't know if I should believe the rep. or not, that's why I posting this note here.

Has anyone out there used Lt. Brown or other colors of Ready Seal on redwood and what were results?

Thank you for your help!

You can use it on redwood, but you might want to dillute it a little bit with Mineral Spirits. Call Peirce at 410-381-8400..........he wont steer you wrong.

I tried it once on redwood and couldnt figure out why it looked so bad, than i remembered,do not apply to redwood,do a test first and what it looks like

The prettiest deck i've done to date was a redwood deck that i applied RS Light Brown (redwood only formula) to. From talking with Pierce, i believe using the original RS product will cause the tannins to flood the surface, making it look dark.

That is correct. The ready seal non redwood formula will bring the wood tannins out. I actualy used it on a customer's deck and thay loved it. To each his own...I guess.

I'm sure Peirce will agree, ReadySeal loves an acidic deck. If you use one of the brightners that can just be sprayed on and left there then the tannin won't come up. I had one deck bring the tannin up and it was one I was using a different brightner on that had to be rinsed off. I concluded the deck really wasn't acidic enough. Did a maintenance wash on it this year and applied a light coat of RS Nt Cdr on it and the result was really nice. The maintenance wash was with a brightner only solution, there was not much dirt or grime on the deck and a water rinse could have sufficed to remove the dirt, grime. The brightner solution was applied just for the tannin and nail bleed.
