I am pressure washing a customers deck and he said when I'm done he is going to re-seal it with Thompsons water seal, and I advised him not to use this, so he asked me what is the best seal to use on this that he could buy at Lowes or Home Depot, does anybody have any suggestions?

Close your eyes, turn in a circle 3 times, and grab the first thing you can. that your best choice. ACtually just kiding I have no idea. I will say I ahve never had much luck with products for wood from either place. I started using Bakers Gray Away and love it.

If he wants just a sealer and has a paint store near him, Sherwin Williams clear (NOT THE PIGMENTED STUFF) holds up OK. Olympic Max in the green can (the toners) are OK for light pigment, their semi transparents are awful.

Olympic Max Toner in the green can is okay, if you can persuade him not to put on ten coats! It will be dirty in a year and you can clean it. Problem is it will get a build-up and look like behr when over applied.

Offer to do it and use Ready Seal or Baker's. They are similar and won't build-up, so you can maintain it every two years or so without stripping.

No pigment= no UV protection! Tell him he needs a tinted sealer. Tell him to order a quality sealer from one of the vendors on here. I prefer David at Southern Stain. If he HAS to buy from a big box, Cabots Australian Timber Seal is what I would suggest.

Here is one I did with "the green can" Olympic Honey gold (and solid) its a good formula, the customer surface at PPG said however that its sister product "Sunproof" has premium ingredients/additions that the Olympic does not.

I have to agree with Mike and Doug, We use Bakers and love the stain and will never use any other brand
