Lots of folks have trouble getting rust stains out. We did too, for a while.... then Rod stumbled across something that I'm sure others are using, but I never see it posted, so here goes.....

Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner

It's great for getting rust stains out - think about it - it does that in the bowl.... lol

does it cause any discoloration of the cement? that's the problem i've had with an otherwise effective product designed for removing rust stains from clothing.

Not that Rod has found so far. He applies a little and scrubs it, then rinses. Not sure how long it sits...

ACID removes Rust PERIOD

I have removed rust with many products and the common ingredient always seems to be the same ACID.

Now don't go using acid or acidic products without getting an education on the product and doing extensive testing.Acid is dangerous to the user and the surface.Start with a products such as the one beth mentioned and work from there. There is also a product called rust away available at the Home depot or Hardware stores,a bit on the expensive side...but safe ;)

If any of you do decks try using your brightner which in most cases is made up of oxalic acid. Usually works pretty well.

Great Tip

Like the other post said acid removes the rust.A good number one truck brighter is the cheapest and best rust remover out there. The good stuff in it is hydrofloric just be safe with it.When its blended down its very safe and effective.

I dont think all rust is created equal. I have had the most success with ox acid. There are still some rust stains that i can't seem to make a dent in around here.

You are right, not all rust is created equal.

I have had good luck with rust stains that were from metal rusting on concrete and some success from fertilizer rust stains but not much success with the Oxalic, mostly use other acids.

I washed my drive today as usual I used my Sod hydrox and TSP mix before washing it. Then used a strong Oxalic mix downstreamed afterwards. I had a lot lot of rust staining underneath where I park my trailer. Where the heavy rust stains where I just kept rinsing with the oxalic until I shot up the fiver. I was really amazed how well it all looked. There were still a few rust spots I should make a paste and scrub but most of the staining just disappeared. I was really pleased and the 21 year old driveway looks like it was just poured.

I have tried the Lysol as well beth. But, I remember it being called "The Works", it specifies that it tackles rust. If you are in a pinch it works great after dwell time.
Otherwise I am an Ox user for sure. 90 per cent of the time it is apply and rinse after a short swell.

I have used "the works" to, it does work on some rust stains, others it doesn't. But you have to be careful, cause it will flat out eat concrete. I have also used toilet bowl cleaners for other stains too. Like any cleaner though, test first.

What mix of Ox did you use on that? ounces per gallon? and is their anything we can do to brighten the concrete I am pretty sure your sprayed the entire drive with Ox? correct? whats a good surfactant for Ox that doesnt neutralize it.

Thanks

Vick
