What do you do about windows when you pressure wash?

No Gary your reputation on Glass is that your the guy in the industry that Knows Damaged Glass.

I remember back when I did new construction they where worried about Glass Cleaners.

I spent a summer in High school working for a Glazier that replaced an entire project because a window cleaner destroyed the Glass

Maybe you're overselling me, Ron.
I don't know a lot about chemistry.
Gotta think about that, and maybe hear more about chems you guys use.

It seems in window cleaning we use chemicals differently - one window at a time, deliberate application, typically with agitation or scraping.
And we're not fighting mold or moss.

So far it doesn't sound like bleach is safe for glass - and I know you want to avoid hydrofluoric acid, because it will react with tin, and one side of glass always has trace amounts of tin.

I gotta ask - what decade was that?
(Serious question - answer may be relevant.)
And when you say new construction - were you cleaning or building?
Did you mean they were worried about glass cleaner chems - or people?

I don't think glass is damaged in new construction as much as it used too.

I'm wondering about chems , I see a ton of damage by Powerwashers in commercial buildings. Splatter on bottom panels.

Hello Gary,

There are some videos about house washing on the website that may be helpful.

I guess what I'm wondering is, where chemicals have damaged windows, how much of that is chems that weren't used properly, versus chems that shouldn't have been used at all near glass?
I'm wondering because Ron asked which chemicals should be avoided.

I think PW are using chems past PH levels on Both sides of 7

I was just wondering if your industry talks about them, whats safe to use?

Ron,
I get the impression the big issues for glass damage in PW are incidental contact with chemicals being used on surrounding surfaces, and dwell time on glass.

In window cleaning we tend to work 1 window at a time: chemicals tend not to dwell any longer than they must.

And since we're focused on glass, we don't have to deal with chemicals we don't actually need use.

So in some cases we might cuse a product to remove a mineral deposit that contained dilute hydrochloric acid - which will damage glass if allowed to dwell on the surface.

But a proper window cleaning method would call for the chemical to be removed as the mineral deposit was gone. So in that case the method would be safe to use - but you couldn't say the same for the chemical.

We keep the windows wet during the house wash. Rinse well and at worst case let customers know they may have hard water staining on windows. Most rinse out in the next rain. Never had a issue.

Much depends on the mineral content of your water. That won't work in my area but might in an area where the minerals are low.
