Google maps

Just wanting to figure out how google maps work. I put my business on google maps and when you search house washing and my city I come up first. But when you search power washing and my city I'm 5th or 6th. Just wondering how the maps work. Cause I'm guessing it not really determined by location. The key words I put in are the same. Just curious.

I dont understand it all either but someone told me yesterday that when Google made their recent changes it gave local people a higher listing. So if house washing is one of your key words and not everyone else that is listed in your zip code area then you would rank higher. More people will have power washing as a key word in the Charlotte zip code so the ones that get more traffic website will rank higher I would expect. We rank first in our zip code area for maps but in Chattanooga where we had finally moved up to 4th or 5th we have now dropped to about 80th. I have someone working on getting back in the top ten at least. So I guess what happen is Google has now changed the rules.

Just google knows exactly how it works. But for sure it depends on how competitive is the keyword you are going after, how optimized is your page for that keyword. I ve heard if your location is closer to the downtown of your city you have better chances to rank higher. Citations are important as well.

I wasn't ranking in google maps local searches at all, but my website ranks high in google. So I just had my website people re-submit my info to google maps but they said it could take up to ninety days...ouch! I don't understand how google maps works cause I come up under google maps on other search engines??? I'm learning as I go, cause I'm not as computer knowledgeable as I probably should be. I do know that listing with thumbtack, manta, merchantcircle etc..helps a lot with SEO and they are free.

Phil, who's working on yours?
I got a call today from an SEO company that said my listing wasn't verified with Google for some reason. I explained what happened and they were surprised by it. Gave me a few pointers that I was already considering to get it back up there.

His name is Lonnie Fore lonnie@magicmarketinginc.com. I mention to him what you had told me and he said he would look at your for free so it could have been him. If not send him a email and see what he can tell you. But I think it what someone else mentioned about being located closer to the center of town help you to rank higher but there are other items involved also. That just applies to Google Maps and not the rest.
