I just purchased a 2004 NPR Diesel. The truck runs great and drives great but there is a slight problem. When you are stopped and have the truck in drive, it will not downshift into 1st gear and take off its stuck into 4th gear. To move you must shift down to 1st then proceed to drive and shift up to drive and the truck will function properly after you start moving. Any ideas?

I don't know, I have one I bought last week, and need to go pick it up tomorrow. I would take it to a transmission shop to see what they have to say. It might be something simple, and cheap, like an external servo.

Could be torque converter lock up solenoid that's stuck or bad.

Any check engine lights on ?

We are looking at one as well, and the 6cyl model comes with the Allison Tranny.

no codes, no lights. I talked to a mechanic earlier that I was interviewing for a job and he stated it more than likely needs to be re-learned. There is a protocol that is to be followed but I will know more tomorrow. Overall a great truck so far and cheap. 2004, 150k diesel, runs and drives great, good rubber for $4900 (Uncle Ben Speaks for Himself in Negotiations)

here is an identical truck with 50k less miles and a gas burner

If the gvw is gonna be more than 14000 then the Izuzu is not for you. However anything under that you are fine.I have had 2 of them when i sold the first one it had 266,000 miles and its still going strong today. The 2006 i have now has served me well so far knock on wood. The transmissions must be serviced to prevent failure. The guy in charlotte could stress that enough.Chris does yours have a vacum hose that might have came off that could be causing this.I am mechanically illiterate just a guess?

Give dimitri from Fox a call he has the isuzu manuals and knows as much about them as anyone on the board. Guy the Isuzu's are commercial duty trucks if a pickup will pull the weight a npr will laugh at it. I have 2 npr's and have never had a problem with weight keep it at the gvw and your good to go. The best medium duty truck on the road.

Great trucks. We try to buy one that was flipped by a tornado the box was destroyed but the frame was still straight and it still ran good.

great truck just purchase a 2008 npr with 42000 6.0 gas owned a landscape company for 25yrs and had 6 mitsublish fg 4x4 , no problems, it seem the more u beat the truck the better it ran .
