Cable modems are great. I have had several at home and work. I have installed several on networks in excess of 100 workstations and they are a great way to provide net access to a large number of users - very inexpensively. I use DSL right now because it has proven, to me, to be a little safer at protecting the equipment during power surges - and we have a lot of them here in our part of Florida.
If you have a cable modem and you haven't already done so, you should make sure that you have something that will burnout in a power surge "before" the surge gets to your computer. If you are working on a network, an inexpensive router will do it. If you are working on a single machine that requires that the modem be attached directly to the machine, I would recommend that you look into DSL.
I have had two surges on cable modem machines and lost $1,000's in equipment and data. I have never had the problem with DSL or when I have had a router installed.
