Oil Based Deck Sealer Cleanup

I have read with interest the many posts related to choosing a deck sealer. Many have noted better results with an oil based product over a water based one. Can you share some specifics about how you clean up your gear after you're finished spraying? If you use a solvent, how much do you need to use, how do you use it and then what is your method of disposing of the waste? I have kept old paint cans on a shelf long after they have lost their usefulness because there isn't a readily available hazardous waste handling site nearby. I favor water based products in principal because they seem to be easier to clean (though the waste product can also be hazardous). I'm looking at becoming involved in deck staining and appreciate any thoughts on handling this end of the process. Thanks.

Hi Jerry,

We simply keep a 5 gallon pail half filled with mineral spirits and cycle it through our airless setups about every other job. Your ability to do this wil depend on the products you use however... some cannot be allowed to sit in the gun and hoses while others can.

Throw a couple rags in a solution of degreaser (in a plastic jug w/ lid) and take it to job sites. Wipes up fast and easy!!!!

I use mineral spirits for cleanup, maybe a cup or so each time. I dump the used stuff into a used metal 1 gallon stain can. Then I can seal the can tight, and dispose of at the dump.
