Desert heat and tires

2012 was our year of tire changes. It isn't safe to drive on tires out here longer than four years. Including the trailers we have 38 tires that need to be changed out every four years.

The heat just dries them out. This time we barely made it and had two blowouts.

In the Midwest when the Summer heat comes on you see overheated cars on the highway. But here most of the vehicles are used to running in 110+ temps so all you see is shredded tires all over the place.

Here is the last of the bunch I have been procrastinating on. They are 2008's and are done for.

I feel sorry for Scott when he has to change over 150 tires. His are probably half done by now.

How long do tires last where you are?

Our wash units tend to need tires every 50,000 miles. More often for the fronts as lots of turning in the relatively small area we service in comparison to hwy miles. Sweepers.........WAY more often than that as they basically drive in circles!

On the upside we don't put many miles on so those tires will last many years.

Haven't had to replace them on the truck yet, but they will last a long time due to not a lot of driving, and the truck not being pushed close to its limits. When I do have to replace them it won't be cheap, 8 tires in the rear @ $500 a piece. I figure I should be able to get 6-8 years on a set at my current yearly miles average.

Tony, I feel your pain!! Our sweepers go through so many tires!! Its insane... Luckily, I clean some tire shops out here and get some discounts...

Apparently Ron too. When I was going around with his sales guy a couple of years ago we were in about a two year old sales car with tires so bald they looked like racing slicks. The tire guy treated Rob like a king and put him in front of everybody else. He told me Ron keeps him in business and pulled him through the bad economy.

I guess it doesn't take much in sales to keep a tire shop in business unless Ron changes tires on his two trucks weekly. Lol.

We are on a rotation. We have five extra rims, currently we buy about 6 tires a week. We have been replacing them individually as needed, but we are getting ready for some complete tire changes. That is for the one tons. The regularickups are nowhere near close. I figure that they are good for 60k because they don't tow equipment.

We used to run the tread off our delivery vans in about 2 years. I wasn't aware of the heat issue till I started Sonitx. All our work in Nevada is within a 60 mile radius and the routes are tight and split into quarters so all our tires dry out before the tread is anywhere near gone.

The cars are a different story. I usually keep soft compound wide low profiles on and they last between one and two years. The BMW's only lasted a year because they camber out the back wheels so much the inside tread wears out in no time.

It is simply amazing to me, having seen so many blowouts and wrecks, that human brings are able to get around safely on such a fragile and small thing as tires carrying so much weight.

How many vehicles are you guys running? Damn, I complain when I replace a tire twice a year. Maybe someone should start a post about #vehicles, I think it would be interesting to see breakdown of one truck vs. 2-4, 10 and then into the 20s and beyond. 80/20 probably applies.
