Rent vs. Own, Sanders and other equipment

I know a lot of wood guys and even more contractors that offer wood as a service but don't specialize in it. In quite few of these cases they rent a large orbital sander or drum sander when restoring a deck. Just some food for thought but I have had owners of these places tell me that they have a formula to pay off the machines in about 10 rentals. This means that if you use the sander frequently enough you may want to consider purchasing the equipment.

I don't know about Sanders, but that makes sense to me. The local rental company here charges around $400 a day to rent a 5 GPM hot water rig. I don't know about 10 rentals exactly, but I can see how it wouldn't take very many rentals to pay for it.

How is that possible? My local guy rents a drum sander $20.00 for 24 hours. the sander must cost 2k.

I don't know where someone is renting a 2000 dollar piece of equipment for $20 a day. I tried to rent a pole saw that was probably $500 brand new, and they wanted about $65 a day.

right now I am using a small orbital sander a detail sander and a 4x24 craftsman belt sander. I would love to have a 8 inch edger and big 12 inch drum sander

im not lying, maybe 25 dollars. the 8 inch edger is 10 a day

That's real cheap, just passing along info. I would never rent one but we are using ours every week. I am sure everyone it rental business has variations to their charges just like everyone else.
Yea it makes it easy to rent at that price. Unless the deck is huge or real beat up I just go over it with a belt sander, only takes 20 minutes or so. but I want to get a 12 inch drum sander, maybe next year.

A couple of rentals near me. Hope this helps someone that's all.

Does bring up another point as far as rentals go. Notice how there are daily, weekly, and monthly prices. Always good to notice the heavy discounts for weekly and monthly. This applies to things like lifts as well. When renting a lift for an outdoor project remember this and also factor in weather. We once worked on a project that would take approx. 2 weeks of work and once I factored in for weather I rented the lift for a month which saved money. Actually ended up having the lift for 22 days so it was a wise move.

Hello everyone.I want to say that renting will be much more expensive if you use it on an ongoing basis than just for one thing, my sander recently broke down and now I choose a new one because my old sander was, to be honest, not very good, and while I try other sander, took an orbital sander for 2 days for rent - I took BO5041 5-Inch makita orbital sander. With her I understood what jewelry work is, it works much cleaner and quieter, and its speed of 12000 rpm is something incredible. It also has double insulation, and the dust is not so much and a lot considering how much dust came out of my old sander machine. Ordered this orbital sander at https://www.bestorbitalsander.com/
An orbital sander costs about $ 100, but as for me it is worth taking something more expensive that will last longer than others
