Stain Flash

Question for you stain guys. What does it mean when someone say that the stain Flashed? Also I noticed a lot of stains states to not stain a deck or fence when it is over 90 degrees. What do you folks in Texas do since you have a lot of days over 90?

flashing happens when the stain does not get into the wood. usually when one over applies the stain and it sits on top of the wood and dries you will see a sheen/gloss/flash. As for the 90 degree problem I believe the professional stains used by contractors on these board have changed oils/ formulas so that using the stains in direct sunlight does not matter.

I start early and finish early or stain late in the afternoon. I just sprayed a fence and I'm done in a couple hours!

Ill get flashing on decks but the second coat should be back brushed right away before flashing occurs.

Flashing means the solvent in a stain has evaporated before the solids have been able to peneteate or cure in the wood. The flash point is often an indicator of when it might happen but doesn't always mean you cant stain just because it is 90 degrees out. But you will have less working time and you don't want to leave the can out in the sun. Like steven said though most of the good stains don't flash that easily

Good answer Charles...

I honestly don't want to be out when it's 98-100+ temps.

I re-stained this dock on Thurs all by hand being so windy and blowing at stone, furniture, swimming pool etc. Now by the time I was finished it was 97 and I think brushing it in does help from flashing.

This is Cedar Dark....

Another view....

Yep. Cleaned a few roofs and houses in there. Beautiful work, that deck pops

Thx...I have like 3 docks all next to each other here..nice place water is SUPER low but they can still get their boats out at least.

My new motto Shane.
+1....
When it's 98 the "Real Feel'' is 108.
Then you have to consider the temp of the wood itself.
I have read decks at 120.
