Need education: fuel transfer

I have a 90 gallon diesel transfer tank on a flatbed.

I thought I would use it all the time, but we only use diesel on about 25% of our jobs. We go through a lot more gas.

Is it legal/safe to put gas in this tank?

If so do I need a different pump?

The tank would need to be "rated" for gasoline..
It would have a pressure-sealing gas-cap, to minimize vapor-loss.
You might have a problem there bud :{/
you certainly would if you had an accident in California.
Call a truck-bed specialist, or RV supply company in your area.. they'll know for sure what the laws are in your area.
..and consult the supplier of the tank you have.

I guess I could just put a tap on it. Will a 18hp Vanguard pull 12 ft?

You'd be well off to hook an electric fuel pump to it.

here's a good point of reference..
for a 25hp system or less..
fuel lines run horizontally ..
can be 1/4"i.d. for up to 6 ft., 3/8" i.d. for 8 to 15ft ..horizontally !!
vertically..
for over 3 ft from bottom of tank to top of motor..
Honda and Kohler engines draw fine vertically,
..but Briggs engines have (over the past 3 yrs) developed an INability to lift over 2 ft.
for Briggs engines, and ANY engine lifting over 3 ft..
GET an electric fuel pump,
.. and focus on profitable WorkSpeed !

um.. ..unless it says somewhere in your business plan.. "we aim to be as cheap as cheap can be".
