What is the UAMCC up to?

My definition of a low baller in my area is not a Compliant Contractor. You are very good at twisting words to fit your needs. I have legitimate contractors out here in my area that I respect very much and in no way would having stricter regulations affect them enough to go out of business. But the guy that buys a home depot pressure washer and works for pennies, those are the guys that with Stricter regulations would go bye bye.

I think you are missing the bigger picture... With more regulations, the cost of our service is driven up. The cost to us does not always correlate with the price we can charge.

Your last sentence is profound in understanding your stance...

YES Steven with stricter regulations the price does go up. So by that you'll saying that you don't wish to make more money? And I'm not talking about ridiculous regulations where we have to spend ten's of thousands of dollars. Most "REAL" power washers out here that I know have some sort of recovery system, just like myself. I don't want to get rid of them. I want to get rid of what I consider a low baller. I have lost a few jobs here and there do to my "REAL." Competitors and I ALWAYS walk away saying; "Well at least a legitimate company with license and insurance instead of one of the low ballers got the job." I would much rather have them get a job I'm bidding on then someone who works out of home depot.

You, nor guy can understand how flooded my county is with low-ballers because your not here. That and you probably have some strict regulations that keep the sort of low ballers in my area out of your area. Tell me how you compete with someone that is doing your same service for the 10th of the price you charge?

You can't know where I'm located... Central FL, trust me, I more than know how it is to be surrounded by low-ballers. Our regulations are not strict... And I don't want them to be any stricter.

You are looking at this issue from the wrong perspective, I don't compete with these people. They are charging a 10th of my price for a different service - they can't offer the service we do.

For one, we pay about $17,500 per year in insurance to allow us to do jobs that our competition can't get access to, we seek customers that need a reliable service, we go beyond the scope of work, we address our customers needs by taking the time to understand their industry, we create relationships, we follow-up... All simple, taken for granted sales and marketing techniques - it's not easy, but it's not difficult either.

Regulating your competition out of the equation isn't the answer... What do you say to the regulators to make sure they don't regulate you out of business?!?!

The market dictates the prices we can charge and what our customers will pay, you insert over-reaching regulation into the equation and you make it more difficult for us. Price yourself out of the market.

Educate yourself, educate your customer...

Sure Kris, you keep telling yourself that. The cost of doing business goes up, we pass this cost on to our customer and they will come flocking... Speak to some of the older guys in the business and ask them how much the square foot price has gone up in the last 20 years. There may be some segments of our industry that are not price sensitive, but the majority of our customer base is - and guess what, likelihood is that need for our service decreases.

Most of our properties are built to be compliant, our service is compliant - reclaim in these instances is an unnecessary expense, an expense that most of my customer base is not willing to pay.

I would imagine that you know your market better than I do - let me say this though, your way of thinking will not work in my part of the country.

Kris

Ask Jim Cooney how that worked out for him. Then do whatever he tells you and good luck.

Everybody else

There is no use arguing with Kris. Just put a San Bernardino search on craigslist for equipment in a year or two for a good bargain.

Parker West, Jim Cooney, and many others have fallen for this line of thinking and paid the price.

There is no use trying to save him. He has made up his mind to go back to a job in a few years because he is unwilling to look at history and see how his approach has failed AND caused damage to the rest of the industry.

Kris I twisted no words, evidently "You" didn't define or explain "Your" definition of a lowballer. There are Compliant Contractors that lowball so how do you compete with them?

Lowballing has nothing to do with environmental compliance, and everything to do with selling price vs. quality of service, but I don't expect you to know this, it's a rookie mistake, no biggie.

Lots of guys have HD pressure washers and work for pennies... How Are Stricter Environmental Regulations Going To Stop That????

And how does this relate to going into a State or City you have no business in stirring regulators up so they revisit PW BMP's for possible stricter regulations? How does this help Contractors that don't have business in that State or City???

This makes no sense at all unless there is something else you've failed to explain.

Kris Do you know what Complience is?

If you do lets here what it is in your area?

This is a great question for you Kris.

I'm sure everyone would like to hear a detailed answer from you. Surely with the backing of both Jim and Robert you have acquired the knowledge to swiftly answer this simple question.

Kris, Florida is #1 (From what I understand) for lowballers, and N.C. has got to be #2.....I deal with day in and day out and sell our service over these guys everyday at 5+ times the price....Why because we don't compete with low price & low quality, our Customers don't want that, and I don't want a Customer that is looking for that.....Neither do I worry about it.

I find that 99% of people who complain about lowballing don't know how to sell and/or don't know how to effectively communicate themselves or their service to customers. I'm pretty sure that's the problem you need to work on Kris....Not a slight, just an observation.

Just more nonsense and mis-direction.

Again, he is not here to help or learn, he is just here to argue his friend's points as they cannot do it themselves.

A great thread being poisoned again because that is all he wants to do.

He has no clue about lowballers, he has not pulled his head out long enough to read older posts, probably even current posts to understand that there are lowballers all around the country with Florida being the capital of lowballers. I have been to many parts of florida many times and have seen the ads, bandit signs, signs on trailers, even t-shirts showing prices for jobs, way cheaper than most places.

Now the back-pedalling saying he calls lowballers the guys that are not compliant, he probably does not know what his area's regulations are but he wants to help those that are wanting more strict regulations in places where they don't like contractors and want to make life harder for them. If truth be known, the lowballers probably do a better job and are laughing at him trying to charge so much and losing jobs.

More regulations are not the answer, no matter who tells you otherwise, read through the older posts and history and you will see it, not sure if you can understand it but the truth is the truth.

Perfect example was Houston, the dumbazzes went there and got changes made but the restaurants and stores stopped washing, yes, stopped washing because they would not pay the higher prices the guys wanted because they bought more equipment and could not do the job at the regular common sense prices so lots of places were not cleaned in a long time. Then With Ron's and Doug's help things got changed and contractors got back to work and places started getting cleaned again. More regulation is never the answer, just an excuse for those that cannot compete with other contractors whatever the reasons are, whether it is lack of sales skills, goofy looking, wanting too much for each job, don't know what they are doing, etc.....never reasons for more regulation.

Not trying to bash here but this guy really does not know how things work in the big picture and is listening to the wrong people.

It is obvious that he is not going to change his mind, he believes what he does but he does not have to start ruining threads and start all of this nonsense because his beliefs are different from most everyone else. He is not going to change how people think or get them to believe what he believes. Like politics and religion, you should not try to force your beliefs on other people as they will resist it, sometimes violently for those that don't get the hints or won't go away.

Allison I challenge you to do a real article with Facts Scientist and engineers (regulators) in the article. Try it I have a few you heard for yourself, you heard them explain first and most effective process is no off water Discharge.

You attended NCE 2011

I Have been Compliant for 30 years.

I can do that. Won't be this issue simply because I'm too far behind to give it the attention it will require.

I want you to understand that if you tell Regulators we Create Waste they will answer the questions different.

Example:

1.While a Pressure washer washes the contaminates off a building allowing them to perk into the soil reaching the water drinking aquifer will this be ok?

2. If a pressure washer runs water through a Plunger pump that uses petroleum in the pump possibly contaminating the property he or she is cleaning will this be ok.

3. When a pressure washer creates waste can he safely wash without reclaim and leave these contaminates they created on property?

4. When washing a D6 Cat with tons of Grease is this ok to wash on a public property and leave the oil and arsenic and other poisons there?
The Above is Exaggerated

Over the Years in Roberts POWER POINTS to regulators are over the top questions like this.

He has one that sounds like he is fighting for US, I can't quote exact but its like this. "Its ok for Pollution's while washing a structure to perk into the Soil" Its not exact but that similar phrase is in a POWER point. Engineers say NO!!!!!! Thats there first reaction!

Craig Miller and I in NC went ROUND AND ROUND because he wanted House Washing reclaimed based on that Statement.

Reclaim on DECKs now in MN that have gotten Passed. Mediatory Reclaim that no one can enforce, so the revenues have not gone up for guys who want to comply. The costs just increased because Billy BOB is still washing with no enforcement.

Truthfully Allison if you really want the truth about this have him answer question from both sides.

I Have a Question for a Local regulator

1. Does a local Authority have Jurisdiction on private property?

I also know if you actually do this you will not be finished next month either. This will take longer to put together and needs to be looked at from both Angles.

You donated one , did they get it?

Oct event San Diego free free text me for more details !!

I sent in text for a handout showing environmental advantages for frequent cleaning. We just need to get some stuff printed. This is a group effort. Once submitted other members take a look and make it better. I am too scientific. We are working hard on this together.

I know this is off topic, but on the first page of this thread Tony posted his son Chris's youtube page and I happened to watch this video:

I thought it was super interesting how he was removing gum without a tip at the end of his wand. Just letting the hot water melt away the gum without a tip. I wonder if he just blew an O-ring and didn't want to replace it?? hahaha

But I thought that was cool never seen anyone do that before.

He has to compete with a lot of guys getting gum up with a hammer and a screwdriver. The video was made like that to show zero damage.

Haha! We have those hacks here too. Good video. I think he did a great job! Concrete looked brand new when he was done. And I did not see a storm drain in site.
