hi outlaw

i guess the first thing someone would need to know to give you a quote is WHAT it's going to be made of.
trex,redwood,PT pine,mahogany,ect......
next would be how fancy you want to get?
Then how high your talking about[first floor or second]
House builders here get $110.00 per sq ft. to build homes with stock item's, nothing fancy.
www.justdecks.org is close to me
he gets about $10 per sq ft JUST for labor.
Then add the material cost's.

Thanks Ron,
I thought after I posted that, that I had left to many variables, I used to build decks, but it wasn't my company, so I just got paid by the hour. I even built one for myself this year and already had most of the materials.

My reason for asking was mostly for advertizing/perswasion( I did go to school honest) reasons ie.to replace this deck you would pay $?????, for me to renovate and repair it you would pay$???.

Thanks
Gav

i would use the cost thing and use the safety angle about PT wood. That gray wood is dead wood[Dont let your wood fade to gray]. "you would'nt want nakkid[lol] wood in your house, why not cover it outside?" "add color and beauty to your home"
"Save a tree, restore your deck" "over 50 colors available"
"make that deck look new again" "even if we dont restore your deck at least give us a call to exsplain the reasons we use the step's that go into our restoration work "
"you pay taxes on that deck. Why not make it look as good as the rest of your home" "deck and wood maintance is part of owning a home, call today for a free price quote"[then your co. name] "Decks, before you replace check out our restoration process. call for a free quote and see the before and after pictures. You'll be suprised"
I can go on and on if you like............

I like the way you think Ron

New construction with Canadian western red cedar will start at about 17.00 a sg ft which includes labor. The home construction company's charge 22.00 a sf. The only pt wood used is for the foundation and framing.

Brazilian Redwood

You have to check this Brazilian redwood out, I am building a deck for one of my customers with this stuff. It is costing me $2.75 a sf and is some of the most denses woods I have ever seen. They claim it will last 50 years. The price is really low now because there is a abundance of it out there. In a couple of weeks I will be building my deck out of it (1000 sf)

LI,

Got any pics of the deck you are building?? I'd love to see it.

Gav,

When talking about PT Pine, I built a deck last year for $10-12 a sq.ft. Made good money at that price. Honestly, I wouldn't bring up the 'replacement' angle unless the deck is something other than pt pine. Many people build them for $8, and I restore them for $2-3. The only time I'd bring it up is on exotic woods. What I'm really going to start pushing this next year is the environmental aspect of wood restoration, i.e. saying they can triple the life of their wood if they protect it, saving valuable resources. Fences are even worse, you could literally replace the planks on a shadow box fence for what I'd charge to restore it. Makes for a tough sale.

Jon,

Ditto on the fencing. Environmental aspect of wood restoration is essential. A well presented fact of this will land you more jobs than not having used it. In todays world of the "green peace" people and the hard core environmentalists, we need to really push this.

Leaving for Florida in two days for a two week vacation. Got to get away from this rain.

Great marketing ideas..

The going rate around here averages $13 a sq ft for conventional woods. Ipe is really coming on strong but the price jumps to $35 a sq ft due to the intensive labor required to build.

Keep the ideas flowing :)

Greg, Hate to sound ignorant, but what is Ipe ?

You'd be hard pressed to find anything but treated pine around here!

Gav

Ipe - pronounced ee-pay - belongs to the iron wood family. It's a brazilian hardwood thats extremely dense and durable as a decking material but is difficult to cut and work with.

Do a search on the net for Ipe and you'll pull some additional info on it.

Take Care,

Greg

A) DIY: Here's a run of the mill 12'x16' deck that I built last year. Material cost, approx. $700. All PT wood. Probably saved about $100 bucks because I was able to reuse the joists from the old deck, which had literally rotted away. I eventually put lattice around the bottom to dress it up a little.

B) Chargeback to the rental property: $1400.00, including material costs.
