Hello every one, I'm from Darien, CT. About 40 inute to New York City. I'm owner of Beluga Cleaning.

I start my business in 2011, first year I didn't do much job and I work night times in restaurants, in other days times at furniture store.
Second year I work in my cleaning business 24/7 and I did ok. And 2013 was not good year at all for me, I get few surgery, I did have two accident, I get divorce (not nicer one). I lost my many things. Anyway crying for losers, life is up and down always right? I'll be just will turn 32 in this april, I don't smoke, no crazy drinking, no gambling or never lazy person. I work harder and faster then any body for sure! Thanks God I'm healthy.

I Have a Phil Ackland license/certification. And also I have IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification). I'm really detail oriented, smile face, clean, shave every day, nice person.-people say that-

And from now really really I want a be successful in this business! What ever takes I'm ok to do it! I have good knowledge about numbers, accounting, using chemicals and pressure washer. I'm good about doing the job and people relation ship. Even my two guys is great with me, which is they not working with me any more but they will start with me in the spring. They been calling me almost every day. My problem is I can't get costumer. I can't sale! I been talking to restaurants business, and nothings. I'm sucks about sales, and I know most important things SALES! All about sales, I want a be good about it!

My questions is:

How can I get new client? How can i get in the door?
I'm giving my business card to restaurant owners and they say "I have a cleaning company, I been working with them many many years". And then I been saying " I can give you better deal and definitely we do better job" and they say mostly time "ok, let me think about it" and I never hear from them.
What should i do about it?

If you guys have better technique, business card, flyer, business plan, proposals, presentation, rules please share with me. I did write one business plan, if any body want see my cards plans I can send it. I do need it and want it so badly successful in 2014! I have tools truck and I can get what ever need it.

Thank you

I am still very new in this business so I do not have many answers for you. The one thing I would suggest right off the bat is, I wouldn't tell the owner I can do a better job, you have to show them.
When you get in front of them, don't talk about how much better or cheaper you can be. Try to set an appointment for a demonstration. Show up at the appointment and give the best demonstration you can, and have a price for the location prepared. Leaving behind solid numbers and a demonstration of your work makes them think about it a lot more then handing them a business card and not following up again.

Hello, Some tips I can offer is selling to restaurants can be a tough job. Never, Never downplay the current cleaner. Always ask if there is an area of concern. They will offer up their problems willingly. You cant do a demo on KEC. How would you? References and pictures. You must be an educator . Your a salesman before you are a cleaner. There are a lot of videos here to help with marketing. Do not make it a matter of price. Remember your window of opportunity for restaurants is between 2-4. If the place is busy , you will get the usual response of, " were corporate" My brother was a regional manager for Darden. He told me how a manager thinks. Don't forget they are getting visited by others. ( landscapers, exterminators ) An inconsiderate landscaper will set the stage for you. Do not give up. be consistent but balanced. I lost a hood job a year ago and my buddy who is an exterminator called me and told me it has new ownership. Ill be going back. wish you the best.

There are some basic "sales skills for dummys" that I follow.
1. Price is the last thing you discuss. You want to establish value, then establish a price. If price is something that comes up right away, those are not long term residual customers. They are shoppers that just want to be able to say they got it done, and don't care, or understand, what good results are.
2. Never expect a potential customer to get back with you. You need to call them back. If you find that they are there every Monday between 2-4 and are willing to talk, then I would make an effort to get there Monday between 2-4 and be willing to talk. Some of my best accounts have happened on the 5th, 6th or 7th sales call.
3. Certifications are nice to show to people, but everyone knows of a lousy doctor that passed all of his state requirements. You need to show them what you can do.
4. From how you typed, it appears that English is a second language to you. If you are going to print out any materials, you need to make sure that they are properly proofed. There are very few people in this industry that can write a consistently good sentence without someone else proofing. In fact, I will throw Ron under the bus and say his writing is horrible. He knows it, so if it is something that is important, he will have someone proof it that he trusts. I know for a fact that he does it, because it is often me that he sends stuff to.
5. Did you catch that Ron sends me stuff to proof for him? Did you realize that we are in the same market, and that we have been in competition with each other for years? There are some synergies that occur when two contractors in a local market work together. There is a lot of work out there, and there is a possibility of having a lot of million dollar contractors in one area. In my area, I can think of at least 6 that are million dollar plus operations, and a couple of us are much higher than a million. We all know each other, and some of us actually refer business to each other. There are things I don't like to do anymore, so I refer them, and there are things others don't like to do, so they refer them to others. Figure out where your power area is, and concentrate on it.
6. There are a lot of people that say that certain areas cannot be profitable. Don't listen to them. Work your strong points, and figure out what works for you. Don't undersell yourself.

Now, I am going to get off my soap box.

Henry, first off do not be discouraged. Believe in yourself and stick to it and keep trying to get customers. Maybe offer free cleaning demonstrations. Also advertise as much as you can on free web sites.

I would reach out to Ron Musgraves or some of the other professionals on this site for help and guidance, too.

If you go some place and notice it needs to be cleaned, try to get the manager to agree to let you do a cleaning demo.

Also go out and do some neighborhood freebies--post a yard sign while you are working and place door hanging ads on all the doors on both sides of the block.

Use the web too. And offer discounts and deals to new customers.

Hope this helps. Ron is brilliant, talk to him, and other guys on this site who know a lot more than I do.

Advertising marketing is important--but I takes money and you've got to be cautious because there are a lot of scammers out there.

Some guys have used street bidder for residential jobs; others use flyers, post cards, signs, web SEO tactics and ad word campaigns. Stick with it. Hard work, determination and good advertising--spent wisely--can help.

Good luck, Henry.

We can help , despite all the ups and downs your here.

BY THE WAY asking for help was the first step. But are you willing to share?

YOU SEE the untold secret is the more you actually share here the more you receive.

So many here come only for help not realizing they have to also help.

These are the people who eventually either come back getting it or they are gone from this industry al together. Or never achieve there goals.

Let's get started, I'm sorry up till this point it seems you have not found groups willing to just help you.

We will ask you here for nothing but you help us to.

Ask away !

The problem I see is like any procedure you have not reproduced the success parts a repeated.

When you wake up the first thing I do is get glasses. Second use the bathroom, third get a drink.

I might blog or watch news next.

About that time I check night logs and look if day time is running depending on how early I woke.

The next is look at my day timer, my alerts are set early to remind me.

Here's where the sales generation point enters my life. I review pending and all agreements out. I review all sales personals pending deals. I check my numbers of goals to make sure we will succeed in our efforts.

Now I repeat the same processes that have worked for 29 years. Boring... Yes it's the same thing nothing new not amazing crazy thing. Yes we have introduced technology when and where we could for sure.

Marketing your companies isn't one thing. It's a combination of many different things you do.

These things have to consistent calculated and completed.

Here's what I see all to often, people lax on sales because they become complacent. They when numbers are down they ramp up. This is the largest mistake I see , I have good friends in this business who have done this recently. I hope they are reading.

Any sale program is ongoing, even if it's only to keep your current customers happy.

Never be complacent when to busy, try to get better customers and raise your prices.

Will slow down that's not you, you have never started a program type sales campaign? Correct

Why?

Any campaign will not see real success for about 6 weeks.

Customers retention of you takes this long.

Here's what I suspect your problem is, you are playing a numbers game. This never works and only achieves you might eat from one meal to the next.

I text you, if your willing to share I'm willing to teach.

Consistent persistence is the key.
Use your resources. I have been a member of UAMCC for a few months now, and I am still combing through the BBS learning and obtaining new info. (I read the post and topics religiously. Old and new) I can’t tell you how many times I have responded to or even asked a question on a topic that was being discussed back in 2009 or earlier. Just my passion for the business and passion for success.
Guys like Ron, Doug, Scott, Guy B, and Ty are great examples to follow, but you cannot expect those guys to offer up more than you are willing to put into this business yourself. Those guys are my mentors and they don’t even know it. I will not hesitate to call any of them, even if it means introducing myself again and again. Embrace the entrepreneurial spirit that exists on this BBS; learn from someone that maybe a better cleaner, washer, or business person than you are.
<o:p></o:p>

Man! There is some priceless information here. Some of it has taken me a few years to learn about sales, and the other a few months to learn about entrepreneurship in general. I have a waterproof mp3 player I use while I'm swimming. Key principles stated here will be recorded and played along with Les Brown, John Maxwell, Zig Ziglar, Jeffrey Gitomer, Eric Thomas, Seth Godin, Tony Robbins, Mike Koenig Simon Sinek and other motivational sales & marketing greats.

Sales, success and marketing is a consistent on-going process. It stops when you do.

Henry,

Way to reach out, everyone here can learn from each other!

I can't even dream of being able to tell you anything on the level of some of the earlier incredible responses, but still wanted to pitch in.

1. You already have to me the most important thing need.... Motivation. There is written information of Gold on this forum, but if you are not motivated to work your a.. off to make beluga cleaning a success then nothing else can help it.

2. A wise man once said on this forum "Everything needs cleaned, just not everyone knows it." Embrace this concept. Sales are made through pounding the pavement/telephone/doors all the time.
Every one of my sales in December were from people who were not even looking for cleaning. Find potential customers and show them how you can help them with what they need (even if they didn't know they needed it).

WOW!
Thank you every one, I been two times, its a amazing. I apologize my one day later answer, I don''t have internet in my new place. Ok, I will listen everyone advise and, Ill contact to Ron.

Also I been doing last few years carpet, upholstery, tile & grout cleaning. I been study, search, read and try many chemicals, tools and methods, I think I'm pretty good about it. If any body have any question about those pleasure to help. I don't sleep much, you guys can text, call, email 24/7.

Hello Scott;

I Used to go visit potential client and then just call ones and then give up. This year definitely I’ll push it, gentle way. Not the over pusher, I know thats not work either. And my personalty not like that. But still I’ll push the limits.
Yes, you so right about my English. Funny:) but true. Definitely need help about writing. Specially about business emails, or any things about business I always ask help some one else (except now) good about writing. Always they find and correct my many mistakes.

I know you been in business since 1989, 15 years in Arizona. Again if you have any idea, proposal, presentation, sales technique/method.. please let me know.

Thank you so much Scott.

Ron Musgraves:
WoW Ron, You are rock start here. You been in this business almost 30 years? Also I see you in this forums almost every day. Thats big work love!
Really thank you so much for your time.

We can help , despite all the ups and downs your here.

BY THE WAY asking for help was the first step. But are you willing to share? Ron you telling me share, my biggest problem my heart is like my head size! I’m the person take people to airport with out taking any penny. I go shovel neighbor house in the snow. In hurricane I’m the giving electric from my generator to every one, even they are richer then me. Even I help my competitor cleaner in here. Which is my ex and my guys thinking I’m stupid. I know I’m not, just I’m nice and good person.

YOU SEE the untold secret is the more you actually share here the more you receive.

So many here come only for help not realizing they have to also help.
I can, as much as I can, always.

These are the people who eventually either come back getting it or they are gone from this industry al together. Or never achieve there goals. I Promise my self, I will never ever get out this business, never will do that mistake. I have many good reason to love this job. Only problem for me weather very cold in here. Like now, every things is frozen, in here we don’t do PW like 4-5 mount. Thats why I do carpet, upholstery, tile grout, windows cleaning, like more indoor things. I think in the future this will be balance that. And I would like to do mostly KEC.

Let's get started, I'm sorry up till this point it seems you have not found groups willing to just help you. Thats true. Also I been spending time in my first year in Truckmountforums.com. That one another great forum, about carpet, upholstery and grout cleaning business. There is have a lot of nice knowledgeable people to, like here. I try to switch my business to KEC and PW because in my area have 100s of carpet cleaner but only 2 KEC. And not many Pro PWer. Again I need extremely help. I didn’t work in any where else and no one teach me, just internet.

We will ask you here for nothing but you help us to.

4. From how you typed, it appears that English is a second language to you. If you are going to print out any materials, you need to make sure that they are properly proofed. There are very few people in this industry that can write a consistently good sentence without someone else proofing.

Scott, that's excellent advise. If all other things between two competitors are equal, the stronger writer is going to win out.

There are three things people need to know about you. One: What do you do or offer. Two: Who are you be personal. Three: Trust, can they trust your service. It is fine to sell a service but if people don't really know what you do, who you are and trust you, all the selling in the world will not help. Be an educator, educate about what you do and who you are. Offer tips and advice about your service. Always profile the services you have provided to show that others have trusted you. Granted anyone looking for any type of service in the end wants to know what is in it for them. That is basic human nature. But how do you stand out from the rest? I always tell my potential customers " I don't sell a service, I sell results ". A benefit to them. A 20% discount or $50.00 off sounds good, but off what? Anyone can get a worse job done cheaper! Though price will always play a factor but educating and setting yourself out from the rest will put you in a better position to make a sale. Find a niche service, something that not everyone else is offering. Example, I specialize in cleaning wood cedar shakes roofs. That is my niche. I spend all my marketing on educating the home owners of cedar roofs to the benefits of maintaining a cedar roof. What is the added value to having me clean it. Once educated to the facts, one you can clean a cedar roof, two you should clean a cedar roof and three there is added value in maintaining a cedar roof, the education makes the sale. If you have a web site make it educational. I am not saying I have all the answers, just what has worked for me. Do a video or have someone do a video about three minutes long about you and your service. Go to: www.cedarroofclean.com as a "guide" of how I market myself and my service. The hone page is who we are and what we offer. The videos explain our process, the before and after pictures show the results and the customer reviews build the trust. Brand your service and educate, set yourself out from the rest. Just my two cents. Feel free to contact. Don't despair we have all been where you are at.
