Mobilization fee

I'm bidding a project that requires an hourly rate and a mobilization fee. I'm used to bidding projects straight up. What's a fair mobilization fee? This would be about 45 minutes from our base but in our normal service area.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I know some guys would charge 1.5 hours of labor for that drive

Thanks, that's helpful. Another question would be how they count mobilizations. If the GC calls in some work that takes 2 days, is that 1 mobilization or 2?

Mobilization is line itemized in a proposal to offset the cost incurred for setting up/break down and getting to and from the job site. Many times I may include two mobilizations in the mobilization line item and if we have to come back a third time its on the PM-General Contractor etc..........

The mobilization can vary from $0 to a million depending on your equipment, man power, and length of trip from your place of business to the job site.

Set the mobilization at $0 and add a dollar an hour to your hourly. Its not like your delivering tractors on a semi-truck. You and a couple guys are jumping in a pick up truck and going to a job site.

Mobilization is designed for transportation cost off-set if your mobilizing a large job site- say if you were a General Engineering company moving in a few heavy pieces of equipment. There would be thousands of dollars worth of getting to and from the job- not an hour of drive time and 10 gallons of gas.

I'm new to this but 45 minutes away means 45 minutes back. So you need to account that and figure you are already using an hour and a half of your own time and fuel

If its in your service area there shouldnt be a mobile charge. If you have to go out for one hour different story.

I like the idea of having one for new construction clean up for a couple reasons: sometimes they want it bid at an hourly rate and you never know how long its going to take you, and sometimes they "mobilize" you and you show up and frankly they aren't ready for the final clean yet! This has happened to me twice last year. I wish I had a non-refundable mobilization fee in those cases. Lately I've been bidding it at $125.00, more if I have to haul in my water.

Mobilization for me is an hour at regular cost. I have people ask me what that covers and why its so much and I just explain what all has to happen before I get there. Pre trip inspection, water fill up, fuel fill up and driving to and from site. I explain all that, and pretty much they all understand and I don't hear about it again. I drive a big truck though and carry water to site, so when I show up its an easier sell then if I had a small pickup setup with no water.
