pressure washer engine swap

I have a old landa pghw5-3000 which has the 16hp vanguard and was going to replace the engine with a 18hp vanguard and was wondering if I need to change anything else when upgrading the engine?

Change from a Vanguard and go with a Kohler engine instead, even if it's a little more $$$. I don't think you have to change anything, at least not with the 3 engine swaps I've done over the years. Just make sure the shaft size on the new engine is the same as the old one.

16 to 18 nothing will change. Same bolt pattern, same shaft size.

I really can't tell that there are any differences between the 18 and a 16, except for the stickers.
If I had my druthers, I would put Kohlers on, too. They are more quiet, they seem to be less problematic, and are just reliable. I have three or four machines that run every day with a Kohler, and haven't had to rebuild one. The Briggs engines, we have two on the floor that have been rebuilt, and always seem to have one on the bench.

Ditto what Scott said , anything but Briggs

All that I ever hear/read is bad stuff about Vanguards. Based on that I'd never have one. Why doesn't Briggs cleanup their act?

I have had the older vtwin vanguards in 14,16 and18 hp that I couldn't kill. I got a newer style 23hp vanguard that started leaking oil a month in. I don't think I would buy another newer style briggs but wouldn't hesitate if I could find a new old stock motor. With the old landa you might have to stick with briggs because of the height issue like ron said.

What do you run Ted? I have an 18HP Kohler and Honda's

Honda and Lifan.

I'm intrigued by the Lifan 22HP twin. 22 Amp alternator. Only $999.

Honda 22 HP has a 17 Amp alternator and is about $1,550. But no muffler or gas tank.

But the Kohler EFIs with hydraulic lifters seem to be the hot ticket. They claim EFI saves a lot of fuel and is really quiet.

I have a 35hp big block briggs with over 2500 hours on it and except for some bad gas once have not had an issue. I have even done the unthinkable and run the machine at idle for 75-80% of its life. 3 fuel filters, 2 primary air filters, and 2 sets of spark plugs, have no complaints and no regrets. At idle the machine sips gas and still has no problem with steaming the heavy equipment.

The 16hp briggs that came on my red vac system has never run well or right since I got it. I have probably 30 hours on it, and am ready to just replace it with a diesel and not worry about it again. Honestly I would stay away anything red from briggs at the moment, don't know what or why the issue but I don't have faith in them.

I can comment on the kohler's, the efi sounds great on paper, but I have not heard to many experiences with high hours on them. I have seen many good ideas not be able to stand up to abuse and time.

Just sayin...

Great thread. I have the the same machine and was wondering the same thing. I was also wondering what the psi and GPM would be with the 18 HP van and lt6035/L pump?

Just wondering if anyone could answer this for me? I'm always keeping a eye out for used engines.
