What is a good anti-virus program these days?

I got hit with something bad this past week which almost totally ruined the hard drive, I could not download an anti-virus software as it would not let me download anything, it was making the computer lock up all the time, random windows pop open all the time and was very aggravating to say the least.

Found out that there was an ask.com folder that was causing most of the problems, I did not download this, it came onto the computer with a toolbar or the mozilla foxfire browser or the internet explorer browser and the computer repair people told me that is how these viruses get onto your computer most of the time, with that ask.com file or toolbar. They told me any other computer I have, look at the hidden files/programs in the program and windows section of the computer and use the add/remove to get rid of them before they damage any other computer then get an anti-virus program and scan the computers.

I got a company to help fix the issue but not 100% yet, I got some of it fixed but now need a good anti-virus program.

I have used Norton in the past but it slowed everything down too much.

AVG was great but the download I tried had some issues with it.

Avast seems to be good but I am not sure, it is only free for 30 days and then $40 per year per computer.

What are you guys using, what is the good and bad of each?

Thanks.

I bought Kaspersky over a year ago after getting hit for the second time with a virus. Nothing since and doesn't slow my computer's performance any.

I'm using Trend Micro and haven't had any problems. I've also used Kaspersky in the past also without any problems. Both are very good anti-virus software programs.

avg...is ok

spybot and superantispyware were the most popular ones used by the 2 computer repair company I worked for, as far as removing infection.
superantispyware is a good, well, antispyware.
avast is a good antivirus.
Both free.
I've tried avg i think, they werent bad I guess.
I just stuck with those mentioned though since pro's in that field liked em.

In the future, if a virus wont let you download antivirus/antispyware, try it in safe mode.
If it still wont work, theres a cable you can get for 10 bucks to plug the infected harddrive into the usb drive of another computer and you can run a virus scan on it.

We were running it in safe mode and could not get a good restore date point, tried just about every date that was in bold and finally got lucky and got it back into normal mode and got rid of the ask.com file and taskbar that was in internet explorer and mozilla firefox and now things are working good again, I need to make it a point to make a restore point weekly or several times weekly so I don't have this problem again after I get a good anti-virus program working.

Thanks guys.

Try malware bytes first to clean it up. Then superantispyware. Then install avast. If mwb ans sasw doesn't do the trick you'll need to get a disc with a linux antivirus like kaspersky and run it. Good luck.

Get the info off you need then re install windows you will NEVER clean the system up. You should have 2 drives to keep your info on the non primary drive and run windows on your primary drive.

I've had the same Toshiba laptop runs super fast for the last 8 yrs and I run Norton 360 never had a virus.I build my own desktops also computers are easy to work on.
