Advice Needed -- Engine Replacement

It's the block with the crank and pistons, no heads, carb, muffler, sheet metal, etc, etc. If you get me the model and typr numbers off the engine, I can price you one.

The numbers stamped on my Vanguard 18 hp are: Model #: 356447 Type: 0142-E1 Code: 07120311

The oil side muffler is also rusted out and needs replacement. The local mechanic also charges $80 per hour labor.

496238 short block $736.60

692099 muffler
$109.30

2-807680 intake valve
$27.65 ea

2-807681 exhaust valve
$27.65 ea

356447 0270-G1 engine
$1084.05

The new engine has a high mount low tone muffler on it, so you'd need to use your exhaust pipe and buy the 692099 muffler. You could ship the new muffler back to me for $125.00 credit.

Russ, thanks for getting this info to me. I learn something new every time you post on here and was please to hear of another option. My mechanic suggested that I scrap the 6-year old Vanguard and buy new.

I ordered a new 19 HP Kohler today with a specialty side muffler for the tight space it's going in. I was going to try the EFI version but due to the tight space I was unable to go this route due to the type muffler that must be used. The Kohler warehouse is out of Jacksonville (40 minutes away) and I will pick up tomorrow morning so no shipping cost is charged. The 2 year old unit is being rebuilt today with a new gear box going on it tomorrow. Hopefully, I will be back working Wednesday morning on a packed 5 week backlog of jobs. Thanks again!

David, how much more $ for EFI?

David, how much more $ for EFI?

The 19 hp Kohler was $895 and the 19 hp EFI Kohler was $1,381 (both exclude shipping). After a discussion from the Kohler rep, I was ready to go with the EFI one. I emailed pics of my skid and after the rep saw them it was clear that the EFI unit wouldn't fit with the required cannister muffler or top-side muffler. In the end, I am okay with this as this 6 year old setup with a new engine is about to become a dependable hot water backup trailer. I plan on building a brand new trailer later this year that will include a new 8 gpm cold unit and the newly rebuilt 2 year old 5.6 gpm cold unit.

All fixed up with a new 19 HP Kohler on the hot skid and just needed a new rear oil seal and gear reducer on the cold unit. Will put them both to work tomorrow as we will be going 7 days a week for a while to try to catch up a bit. Tested the new Kohler tonight with an 06 nozzle and psi went right to 3,500. For the last year, the old Vanguard could only produce 3,100 with an 06 nozzle.

Hey, I just hit 1,000 posts with this one!! I wonder when I get another green dot?

Thats a good looking machine, where did you pick the engine up that you got it so fast?

Envirospec has the 19 HP Kohler's on sale this month 20 amp with muffler for $895. Kohler just happens to have a distribution center on the south side of Jacksonville 25 minutes from my house. Instead of paying shipping, I just picked it up myself. I ran it all day today and its a beast--and quiet compared to the Vanguard 18 hp. The one bad bit of news is that I just replace the rear main oil seal on my 2 year old Vanguard and its still pissing oil all over my gear and pump. Will take it back in and replace the front main oil seal next week. smh
