Leaks on the supply side

I've been a plumber for about 20 years. Any MIP (Male Iron pipe) thread should have at least some Teflon tape. I usually put tape(about 3-4 wraps) with a little pipe dope on top of that...never have any leaks. Be careful over tightening plastic fitting tend to crack, especially if you pile on to much teflon. The barbed fittings...once you start pushing the hose on dont stop until its all the way on. Once you stop its really hard to get started again.

As a plumber I prefer Keytite pipe dope. Whatever you pick, you gotta make sure it's safe for plastic pipe. For the filter, I'd recommend a radiator clamp around the female threads. The tightening action acts like a wedge and will often split the female portion.
