Question For AZ & NV Guys

Guy Blackmon

Roundtable Host 2009
OK so here's the deal....25th Wedding anniversary is coming up in Sept. and Mary has always wanted to see the Grand Canyon.

Here's my idea (Thanks Ron)......We'll fly in to Phoenix or Vegas and rent a car to road trip the rest of the way....so here's my question......what would be the best route? I'd like to keep it simple as far as car rental so I'd like to pick up and drop off at the same airport we fly into and out of.

I don't want to spend all of our time at the GC because there are so many cool places to see in the area, again the question...which area of the GC is the best to visit? What other areas should we put on our agenda?

We'll probably camp most of the time but I'm not against a good Hotel either.

Does the TSA frown on tactical shotguns in checked in baggage? I really don't like traveling without a weapon.....First part of that was a joke, second part wasn't.

Help me out guys!

If you are doing the Grand Canyon, go through Vegas. It is a shorter drive, and you will want her to take the helicopter ride. They all leave out of Vegas. I would recommend a night in the El Tovar, unless you want to hike down to the phantom ranch. If you come to Phoenix call and stop by.

I still say Phx Scott , drive see all the sites on the way to gc, page , oak creek, montezuma castle , petrified forest..

Stop in Laughlin stay at the bell Maybe even see the London bridge. From Laughlin do the dam tour. Drive into Vegas drop car see the shows an when done take a 10 cab fare to the airport.

If you come this far an done watch at least two az sunsets one one the desert an the other on lake Powell you have cheated yourself. I suppose for Scott hold a baby while doing it would be better.

Just to many things to see in az about history. Tombstone !! Your going to miss that? Sorta like going to dc an not seeing the liberty bell or Lincoln memorial.

Vegas is two days!! Once you seen casino you seen them all. Stay at the golden nugget it's really in the price range an nice. You want to be a high roller go to the Wynn.

Scott's right take the flight on chopper over hover dam. But do it after you took the tour.

Rent a cabin in oak creek or that place Tony retreats to. If your in Phx an don't golf which I know this is the misses trip your silly. Trust me there are spas she can go to right on the course or massive shopping malls to take out her frustration on you golfing.

I know this is all about her an the Grand Canyon so I'm sure what ever you do it's going to be great.

Or you could talk a guy with a Raptor into giving you a tour of some amazing sites.

I told him a circular route:

Bundy Ranch (lol)
North Rim
Wave Canyon
Horseshoe Bend
Lake Powell
Monument Valley
Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings Colorado
Canyon De Chelly
Crater
South Rim
Sedona
Hoover Dam
Mt. Charleston.

A night or two at the Mt Charleston cabin after that round trip might result in more offspring. lol.

Tombstone, Bisbee and Karchner Caverns would be great, but that's just too far south.

Guy doesn't want to go to California. All his friends would make fun of him back home if he did. lol.

I did tell him about the sweet gun laws out this way.

He can drive all over without a care in the world about any restrictions. When he gets tired of driving he can stop just about anywhere and blow off some steam.

At least BLM land is good for something.

Ron, when you come up here I'll take you to the Bundy Ranch too. When we have the event maybe a few of us could go up there for a picture, if the Ranch isn't a smoking crater by then.

LOl, all the sites I told him are all the miscellaneous ways you go to Utah that allow you to avoid Vegas. :)

The park can be done in a day or two. I can help you with the eternity if you like.

And Ron, there is not much better than holding a returnable baby.

Wave canyon is REALLY hard to get tickets to get into. I think they only allow a few people a day to go there.
