Gutter Critter Test

We are still working on the shapes for the Gutter Critters. But I did a sample test today and just wanted to show the results.

I will probably have them available in a couple of weeks. I have enough material already cut into the fish shapes to make 6-12. I am still trying to figure out how to work the embroidery machine but I already have some done and they just need to be filled.

If you want the fish shape email me at faythshelton@gmail.com

I will probably be changing the name when I start selling the different shapes but for now I am using that email address.

The cost for now is $29 each plus shipping. We are making them lighter weight for cheaper shipping.

Keep in mind Carlos and my brother Chris have been using these for almost a year and they say you need three to form a good way for the water to go through.

They hold themselves down when they are normal sized. That one held itself down too but on her first test it went around the edges because it was too short so we had to hold them down.

Looks like it filters great, as good or better than the commercial brands I have used in the past.

To be more cost effective and to keep production efficient I would do away with the fish design, it is a great tool for promotion but out in the real world it would not be as effective as a tube or sock like what most of us use and what most of the absorbent companies make, tube/sock or pad.

It does look like better absorbent media from what I saw.

Maybe you should also sell the vinyl sand snakes or sand bags to hold the larger ones in place like in spill situations or cleanup situations.

What sizes are you planning on selling?

Great job Fayth.

They stay in place just fine regardless of the size. We are just trying to keep them affordable. The fish ones have two sections that hold the media in tight. That means the water flows past the sponge twice and there is zero chance of the media shifting and somehow bypassing the sponge. If she makes a six foot long boom double chambered like that it would have to sell for $110-120 just to make them worth selling. They do last a long time though. Should last for at least fifty cleanings. Carlos has been using the same three fish since October and was just recently saying they were starting to not work as well. He does gas stations and I know he has done a lot more than 50 in that time. According to the manufacturer one fish should hold at least three full quarts of oil before it becomes saturated. That is a LOT of runoff oil.

Last night we made a smaller one with one ounce of sponge. We ran three ounces of oil in about 3 quarts of water through it. A little of it bypassed around the sides because it was so short and we poured too fast.

The sponge is supposed to turn dark brown or black when it is saturated. This is what it looked like after pouring three times its own weight on oil through it.

And this is what it looks like new.

And side by side

So they will last a really long time.

Also Carlos and Chris say they work best when one is behind the other and it filters twice. That way they can be rotated also.

The question is, if the longer ones can be stretched out to 100 cleanings because of the extra length and material and the cost for two is $220-240 are contractors going to find them cost effective at a little under $2.50 per job?

I would say yes if they work in an area where proven ground filtration is accepted or yes where filtered runoff can go in landscaping or be recycled and reused.

We are still experimenting with different configurations at this point.

Tony, is that black fiber material part of the filtering system or just what holds the filter material? If the black material is not filter material could you use the tight mesh nylon tube/sock stuff like the other manufacturers use? If so it might be more cost effective if you could.

If you have to use the black material for part of the filtering material then does it come in tube form or you have to fold it over and sew it to make the tube/sock? If so maybe other manufacturers out there with better prices.

You go girl! I want 3 fish units. Excited for you Fayth. Two things to remember, Persistence and Hard Work (and a little guidance) and I believe this business venture will be very successful for you. I will e-mail my order.

Fayth Shelton your email link has a period behind the com in the link (com.) If you remove it, it will work fine thanks for getting the order out today.

I fixed her email.

Pete. Yours were finished too late to get in the mail today. She learned today that the material clogs up the machine with fibers unless she cleans it every 2nd or third one. But it took her hours to figure out that was the problem. She is rolling now. I can't get her off of it.
