Getting down to business....well, another kind of business

Tony Shelton

As you guys heard Shelly was elected to the Nevada State Legislature. We thought it would slow down after the campaign, but it looks like the campaign was a walk in the park.

She found out she won at about 2am. She got her first official email from the state telling her the schedule for the next week at 2:40 am.

The phone started ringing at 6am. She had caucus meetings that day from 10am till 2am. Got to sleep about 3am and the calls started again at 6am

The next day her first meeting was at 9am and continued on till around midnight.

It got a little better later in the week, but not much. She got her first full nights sleep Sunday night.

But what is happening is amazing!

We have not only elected the first fully republican controlled government in Nevada since 1929, but for the first time EVER, the republican side of the Assembly is now fully in control of FREEDOM/CONSTITUTIONALIST Republicans instead of ESTABLISHMENT Republicans.

The greatest takeover in the history of this state came last week when the few FREEDOM Assembly members who were ridiculed and ignored in the past were joined by a slew of newly elected FREEDOM Freshmen that tipped the scales and allowed them to take over the leadership.

That means no more killing of good bills in committee before anyone even has a chance to vote on them. That means we can finally start REDUCING government instead of increasing it!!

This makes the tax loving Liberal pundits crazy.

This guy, Ralston, is having a fit. He is the local liberal pundit. He made fun of all of us at the Bundy Ranch, and now almost every one of the newly elected legislators participated at the Bundy Ranch and gave him their support.

Now we have a chance to do something. Here is the newly elected Nevada State Assembly Republicans. (Shelly is on the left) Hopefully this state will never be the same.

And here is Ralston lamenting the fact that Bundy supporters are elected.

Never Mind, this is the new thread. Was reading from phone earlier and thought this was the other thread. Carry on here Mr. First Man

This is soooo going to be good to follow. Let's watch how many other states follow Nevada's lead.

Way to go Shelly and the entire Shelton gang.

It all started with muted excitement tinged with apprehension.

Shelly had come home from a Wednesday night church service with a renewed sense of faith. The minister had spoken about fear. The congregation followed with him as he walked them through page after page of instances where God had told the faithful "Fear not" or "Do not be afraid".

Arriving back home Shelly, without hesitation, proclaimed "I don't know what big thing God has in store for our business, but whatever it is, I WILL NOT be afraid.

Two days passed uneventfully. And to be honest, I didn't even give it any further thought.

Then on day three our neighbor, Chris, who is want to randomly straggle over for short political conversations, was seen making his way to our driveway as Shelly and I were getting a truck ready for the next days work.

"Shelly." He asked, "I have heard you speak before on the second amendment. Would you be willing to do something to help secure those rights?"

"What do you mean?" Shelly inquired.

"We have been talking amongst some of the Republican members and determined we would like to enter a strong gun totin' woman in the race in this district. Would you be willing to run for the Nevada State Assembly".

"No".

"I understand," Chris answered. "It would turn your life upside down and there would really be no return.".

"What do you mean?" She asked.

"The fact is you can't win. Our district is too heavily favored for the Democrats. But there are other races that are close. We figure we can scare them into spending money on this race and that might take some of their funds away from the close races." Chris explained.

"Why don't you ask Tony?" She enquired. He would be much better at that than I. He is used to speaking in front of people."

"We need a woman" said Chris. A woman will make them nervous because some women voters will vote for a woman regardless of party."

"I can't do it. I am homeschooling Fayth and we have a business to run. You will have to find someone else." Shelly replied.

So Chris left feeling dejected, leaving her with one last request to think it over for a couple of days and to pray about it.

Shelly laughed it off as ridiculous as we made our way back into the house.

Later that night, in bed, Shelly turned toe and asked "Do you think THAT is what God is telling me not to be afraid of"?

"What? I asked sleepily.

"Do you think God wants me to run for office?"

"I don't know" I replied.

That was the beginning of what now finds me sitting in the back seat of Shelly's new car I promised her in jest if she won. We are almost to Carson City where she will start orientation tomorrow seated at one of the most surprising, exciting and dangerous state legislatures the status quo has ever seen.

It seems like so long ago. But it all started in February.

Miracle one - Shelly is randomly asked to run for office right after hearing the nudge she needed at a Wednesday night Bible study.

Many more outright miracles transpired along the way.

As time permits I will let you guys know of the miracles, the letdowns, the backstabbing and everything else that transpired.

But for now, I just want to get there and get some sleep!

We have a lot of work to do!!

Overwhelmed.

So today I've got a few minutes of break. Shelly is on her last day of orientation and Fayth and I are still looking for housing for the four months she will be in session.

I'm really surprised how little they get to work with. She gets a little over $600 per month for housing and even two bedroom apartments are a lot more than that here.

It was eye opening as to how all this works. She gets x number of dollars (not XXXXXXX like some garage cleaners) for housing and travel. From experience I know for a fact that the money they give her will run out in less than three months.

When that money runs out the only legal way to supplement is to get donations from lobbyists and use that money.

That is called your "war chest" and can be used for living expenses and for future campaigns.

I am impressed with the current leadership in the legislature. They got with Shelly and explained to here that she can't take donations and talk about what the lobbyists want in the same session. They also said she needs to explain to them that donations only do one thing - that is - it gets the legislature to give them an audience for their ideas and does NOT buy a vote.

One leader emphasized that by talking about a $5k check she got from a utility company that she ended up voting against on 4 out of 5 votes last session, yet they still gave her another $5k this session.

It is a crazy system. But surprisingly even small donations get an audience. This might be something we powerwashers may want to consider in the future no matter how revolting it sounds.

As long as you have good moral people in office this can work. But anyone with a lack or morals will just use it as a money making scheme.

This is a long way from where we were a few months ago.

Back to the story:

So Shelly decided to give it a go.

In March she paid the $100 filing fee and put her hat in the ring.

We had to spend about $1000 out of our own pocket at first to incorporate, get accounts set up and get some basic business cards.

Soon after our neighbors put in $500.

Now it was time to get down to business and try to work up some money for her to run. I knew nothing about how these things work so everything was a learning experience for both of us.

The first event Shelly attended as a candidate was a mixer at a bar/restaurant. This was before the primary so there were LOTS of candidates in the mix.

Our neighbor had told us about three candidates who were freedom lovers like Shelly and all three of these were going to be at the mixer so we were excited.

I had to get all bound up in a suit for the first time in a long time. Earlier that week I had to go out and buy three suits because I had (uh hmmmmm) gained a little weight. Shelly had to buy some new suits because she had LOST weight.

Upon arrival it was pleasantly surprising to note that there was zero stuffiness or noses stuck up in the air. Everybody was down to earth.

I recognized only a few of the people there from newspapers or TV.

I did notice this cute short girl who walked by with a big smile and I thought to myself, That girl should run for something because that smile could disarm anyone. I later found out that "cute little girl" was Michele Fiore, a FIRECRACKER and Shelly's mentor. You can see her fire here:

This first event was a fundraiser for two candidates and an introduction for Shelly.

She stumbled through , Uhh, short introduction uhh, speech doing the best she could uhh, after being out of practice speaking uhh, in public for almost 20 years. LOL.

After that speech she decided to go work with toastmasters to brush up on her speaking.

She met some really good people there. Everything from city counsel, to judge all the way up to national senate candidates. They all liked her right off the bat.

But they all had one thing in common. They all thought she didn't have a snowball's chance to win.

With 10,000 Dems and 5,000 Reps everybody wrote her off from the beginning.

But, Shelly thought God put her there for a reason, so her next step was to have an event of her own to raise capital.

That will be the next story.
