I was in the middle of cleaning a roof today when a neighbor starts yelling at me to not kill her plants, I said mam I'm not cleaning your roof! She said all you pressure cleaning guys are alike, you all say you wont kill the plants and you still do! LOL I told her that when I was done I would bring her a business card and she could call me if there was any damage(then I took pics of all her plants) problem solved. No then the grandmother comes home and starts yelling at me. Thank god my wife was with me today to diffuse that situation. Hacks are killing the industry!!!!

Excellent responses that should go in your policy and procedure manual.

We have a good bunch of cleaners around here. I don't hear many complaints about plants. Some people seem concerned, but never had anything like that. We have had some problems in the past, but not nearly as much.

Or you could have had your ground guy/gal spray them in the face with your water hose....... But I guess your response was a bit nicer and more professional.

lol Nice response.

I have been pretty lucky as I have never damaged any flowers. Flowers are a large reason why people do not have their house washed

What makes it a little more difficult in Florida is the lack of gutters. I bet only 2 out of every 10 roofs we clean have gutters, so you really have to have everything watered down heavily and or covered. With so many guys down here giving it away, that's one way they cut corners. Skip all that, splash, dash and cash your check before that afternoon rain hits, killing everything in sight.

Over here in the Tampa area, we don't see many roof cleaning companies "giving it away". Maybe because we are here, and we are "expensive", compared to some ? Our competitors shop us, and then a light goes on, and they say to themselves "Wow, Apple Roof Cleaning has been here for 20 years, and gets these kinds of prices, and so can I ".

Chris,

I think you're right. Rethinking that statement, we definitely loose more pressure washing jobs because of price than roof cleaning. When I wrote that, I probably had just lost a 3,000 square foot house wash to some joker doing it for $99.

Customers are far less picky about who will pressure wash their house, then they are about who will clean their roof. In pressure washing, it seems to be a lot about price, but not so much in roof cleaning.
In fact, over here in Tampa, if you are not close in price to the other guys, many customers will RUN from you. Every month, we are told by customers "All you guys are very close in price, but because you did our neighbors, we are picking your company".

And, we have also been told just the exact opposite by customers" We decided to go with your competitors, because they did our neighbors" :)

Jim sounds like you handled the situation well. Why can't they just come out and asked you what your doing to prevent damage to there landscape instead of assuming your like the company that she had a bad experience with in the past. I don't get it. Lucky for you your wife was with you.
