Hey all. I have a neice who has a deck that I'm going to be adding onto starting next week. What's there is 12 by 16 a d it'll be a 20 by 24 after.
her and her hubby bought the house three years ago and I don't think the PO took proper care of the deck. I did what I could win information gained here, but the results were just good ish. So, to save them some money and to make the existing deck look better, I pulled the deck boards up and flipped them over. The bottoms are in very good condition, which I figured they would as they didint get any sun. But the problem I have now is dirt/ grime stains where they were sitting on the joists. I already pressure washed once without chemicals and it all cleaned up real nice except for where the dirt/grime from the joists. Well, actually, there is some algae, too, to get rid of, but not that bad.
Before I go throwing chemicals at this and making a mess, I thought I'd ask for some recommendations on chemicals to use for this. I don't seem to find anything with the search and seem to be having some maladapive brain activity(brain fart) on what to use.
any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
id like to add a photo, but my cameras 150 miles away. Not very computer/ electronic savvy, but maybe when my neice gets home from work she might have one of them fancy phones that can get a picture and I( actually she) can get it on here.

Flipping wood decking is a horrible carpentry mistake. Before you increase possible lawsuit's don't flip anymore. Stick to pressure washing. Decking must be laid crown up or out. doesn't matter is its decking or framing. Meaning the direction its grows or natural outer growth ring contour goes out and up. If not the framing or decking cannot deflect weight. It will either deflect flat when laid properly or cup if laid improperly. Cupping deck boards risks- water pooling, tripping hazards, mechanical screw pulling, deck / framing mechanical delamination a big and common thing increased board separation = pet dogs cats amputation. 2 cupped deck boards increase gapping during contraction. I'm a carpenter by trade and was a decking specialist. Sorry for the info

. Give me a call on how to finish this properly.

I've framed well over 100 houses from 900 square feet up to 15,000. Built well over 100 decks from144 square feet up to 5,000.
I was asking about cleaning, not framing, but thank you for your wisdom?
i will pass on calling you on how to finish it properly.

A wee bit of difference in framing between Florida and Michigan.
im sure you frame for snow loads there.
just as we frame for hurricanes.

try a sodium hydroxide mix. do the entire deck boards for uniformity. put some sh in the hydroxide to get rid of the mold. a little sanding might be needed.

I wasn't trying to down talk you. Just trying to help you and the deck from improper install. I'm from Nj in the northeast we frame for both hurricanes, snow loads and even get both at the same time. If you ask a question responses will come. If you do something wrong people will let you know. When I ask a question if someone is kind enough to respond I say thank you. Being a nice guy. Skinning the existing decking with 1 x 6 will cost approx $220 with screws. Then raising the new framing extention 3/4" for a flush deck. With no additional cost and a beautiful deck. You thought of that thou.

Very simply wood stains and no matter what chemical you use a stain will be left . A planner can be used . Quicker and will get to a depth to remove the stain.
