Nozzle maintenance

Here is a picture of tips. If you notice, the tip on the far left is brand new. As you go down the line, the openings get bigger and bigger. When the openings get bigger, that means that you are going to start losing pressure. The volume of water remains the same But it is the difference of pushing the same amount of water through a 1/2" pipe and a 2" pipe. It does not take a lot of brain juice to figure out that there will be more pressure and back pressure going through the smaller opening. Since we all like the pressure, we all like the smaller opening.
The idea is that you need to replace your nozzles regularly. Most nozzle manufacturers say that nozzles should be replaced every 40 hours. I think that is a good basis. A better one is that every time you change the oil in the motor of your machine, take a half second and replace the nozzles. That should be about 50 hours.

I just go until I loose it, normally happens between the .5 hour mark and 500 hour mark. I generally don't ramp up my psi though so I wouldn't notice the difference. If you are going to replace the nozzle keep the old one as a spare, you always loose them at the worst possible time.

I'm sure you will talk about this soon but did some normal maintance today and found my bells were pretty loose. At what hours do you suggest tightening the belts, what belts have you found to last longer(cogged belts, smooth belts) and have you or anyone else added a belt tensioner of sorts to keep them tight, like on a car engine? Thanks for the forum and the help. Forgot love the tight belts, a 4 Gpm and a 5 Gpm under driven got my 10 Gpm back and a bit of my pressure back.

While on the subject of nozzle maintenance. How can I keep my JROD from rusting? After every job I flush I am sure to clean all the bleach out of it and not in a location that it will be in standing water but I still have surface rust forming. Should I soak it in some type of solution? Would be nie to soak them for avoiding rust and preserving o-rings.

Hey Mike, After rinsing the J-Rod free of SH, Simply dip the J-Rod in a bucket of 50/50 Antifreeze... It does the trick for mine!

Regards,
Mike

Randy to answer your question on the belts, cogged v-belts are well worth the extra money, don't get a chinese or from anywhere near there belt though. I have never worn through or broke a North American belt, chinese belts last a few days to a week though I have found. I have spares for every belt on both my systems that have been collecting dust for awhile now. NAPA has them and have worked well up until now.
