Zink

A few days ago I put in a bid for a roof job for an elderly couple. 1 of 3 bids. She called me this morning and asked what kind of solution I would be using to clean her roof. The 2nd company had finally shown up. I told her a water/soap/bleach solution. She asked why I wasn't using zink in my mix. ??? what, I do not bad mouth any other companies in town so I simply asked her what the zink was for. She said she was told it had to be applied to completely kill all the bacteria. WTH? I never asked her a name but I think I know. She is still waiting on the 3rd companies bid. It's been 5 days. Am I missing something about ZINK? Why do people think they have to lie to customers to get a job? Show up when called, give an honest estimate, and go on with your day!!

Ever notice that a roof is clean under a metal vent, or lead flashing, or vent pipe it is metal leaching when it rains down below it. there are zink strips for sale that are mounted on the ridge line to do this very thing leach down the roof, suppose to help keep the roof free from algae longer.

Those Zinc strips only work to keep an entire roof clean if they are placed about every 4' down each side of the roof. That would not be very appealing looking. And as far as selling the service,..Zinc doesn't have an instant cleaning effect,..would be a hard sell to a customer, especially if you want paid when you leave. There are shingles (AR) that have copper added to the granules and is supposed to keep mold growth from happening,..I've cleaned numerous AR shingled roofs.

Zinc and/or Copper sulfate powders would possibly be a good preventive or proactive mix,..but so is a light roof mix,..and is cheaper to make,....but either way,. selling preventive can be a hard sell as well,..people would rather just wait and see.

AR stands for Algae Resistant,..but they are not algae proof.

I was going to send one of those over to a Condo Association until I read

" Observe all possible safety precautions when working on or near the roof. The solution should be left on the roof for at least 15 minutes but for no more than 20 minutes. Finally, rinse the solution from the roof by gently spraying the surface with water "

Has it always been like that?
