How does the early spring compare to the rest of the year?

I did my first paying job April 2 of last year. From that point on, I was continually shocked and happy at the percentage of bids we landed. It was reassuring in terms of our rates. I think through the summer we averaged 75-80% of bids landed.

Here's my question though. Do you normally find that the early spring is a time when your percentage on jobs landed goes down? Calls coming in are picking up, cold calling is working, post cards are getting some response, newspaper is getting a few calls, however I'm not landing the same percentage of jobs. I can tell immediately at some houses that chances are slim, but I'm doing some bids in good neighborhoods where people are spending money on their homes and property and I end up with a "we'll think about it," "we'll call you more towards the summer," "I'll go over it with my husband/wife."
So is this normal for the early spring? It's the time of year to work on your house and more people are price shopping, getting ballpark ideas of what they'll spend? For the last 2 weeks, I've been closer to 50%. Granted, some are unconfirmed either way so that number may go up.

I have found two things that happen

1. Beginning of the year - a lot of contractors will shoot lower bids for two reason
a. they have been out of work and want some cash flow and are afraid of losing the job. As the season progresses - contractors are busier and have cash flow - allowing them to bid higher.

2. Spring Time (Nice Weather) brings the homeowners out and they see what needs to be done, so they call for estimates and decide to do it themself or not do it at all.

**Even if you have to bid a little less than normal - you may choose to do so - its very important to get into these neighborhoods first - put your yard sign out. More business will come in those neighborhoods and you can make your money at that time.

just my opinion
