program starts when Email opens

Something strange has started happening on my wife's computer.

She uses Outlook Express for her Email, she also has AIM which is not configured to auto log on when Windows boots up.

What started happening the other day is whenever she opens Outlook Express Aim opens too.

Cannot find any connection between the two which would cause this to happen.

Anyone have any idea why it is happening and now to stop it?

I use Outlook and it does not happen on my computer.

Just noticed that is is somehow a part of Outlook Express, could this be part of the deal with MS and AOL? I want it removed and don't like it starting each time she opens her mail.

Is it actually logging on, or just opening the window? Did you check your settings in the Sign on/off section of preferences?

It logs on, I deleted AIM and checked Outlook Express and the AIM part in Tools was gone.

So I downloaded AIM and reinstalled it, PESTO it is back in Outlook Express and as mentioned before when I open Outlook EX. AIM opened and logged on.

There is no setting with MAIL or any way to turn that off since there is no way to turn it on.

Wondering if this is not part of the agreement that MS and AOL made in the lawsuits about sharing.

If so it stinks.

Jon,

I would not try to delete but uninstall the program, then reload it back if you would like. Deleting a program does not completely wipe all programs away.

Go through the control panel click add/remove programs, then highlight the program and click add/remove. Some other independent programs claim to more completely remove the programs.

Good luck

Jon,

Try this first. Load up Outlook. Go to the Menu bar up top and click on "Tools", then click on "Options", click on "General" (should be on top of the current page), then uncheck "Automatically log onto AOL Instant Messenger" and then click apply.

This should work.

Also, have you just installed a junk mail killer program? They have similar setting to this that ask for a default email program.
You'll have to search to find this function.

Good luck again,
Roy

Ok did that, still opens even though it is not set to.

Will now remove AIM, uncheck it again in Outlook Express and reboot.

Then D/L AIM again and re-install and see what happens.

No spam programs loaded in her computer, she does very little web browsing so not concerned about it.

This just started after I upgraded her AIM, so think it has something to do with MS and AOL agreement but if someone checks DO NOT LOAD and it still does something not very kosher going on.

I don't trust either of those two companies either.

My son's computer (my old one) does this too with Outlook Express.............but I've never looked into fixing it.

The truly annoying thing about it is that it logs me off of AOL IM on my computer because it auto logs me on her computer when we open the email program..............

Let me know if you figure it out..............its just not a priority for me right now.

All I know for sure is never had it happen till I downloaded the latest version the other day.

It bugs the wife since she uses it to Email jobs back to the office, files going back and forth and now this pops open, sure you can close it after it opens but what a pest! Oh wait, AOL which owns AIM is a PEST to begin with, guess it figures.

Once I find out how to fix it I will let you know.

Just a thought. Because the newer AIM versions were giving me problems I installed an older version, there is no real advantage in using a newer version just adds more AOL propaganda and blinks on and off. They also added email services to their newer versions. Probably a check box in AIM preferences to uncheck to stop that annoying problem.

Anyone have the version before the latest?

If so would you email it to me so I can just install it and not mess around with this new version anymore.

Thanks,

Jon

My accounts are beginning their mid-year cutbacks and since I'm sitting around not doing anything, it's on the way as attachment aim95.exe (2.33mb). Works good just make sure you tell it not to upgrade and not to ask again when prompted. Hope it goes through.

Just remebered another reason I kept this older version. Here is the hack for completely turning off the ads. Only works in this version.

In your AOL Instant Messenger directory, open aim.odl using Notepad. Find the section that appears as below:
on_group(5)
{
load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
load_ocm advert required
}
This is the code that loads the advert.ocm file. Simply place a semi-colon in front of the load_ocm lines, and the buddylist ad is disabled. The semi-colon "comments out" that line of code, so that AIM ignores that line. Here is what the new code should look like:
on_group(5)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}
Save the file and start AIM. The ad banner will be replaced with a blank gray area.

Final report,

With the advice of George I reinstalled the latest version, then uninstalled it using AIM uninstall and not the windows add/remove program.

Rebooted and tested Outlook Express, worked like a new baby should work, perfect, no Aim opening either.

Then I installed the older version he sent me and PESTO again all works just as it should.

So a nice warning, AOL and Microsoft are now holding hands under the table and intergrating some of their programs.

What next I ask, makes me even more leery of ungrading anything and to think I almost bought a new Dell for myself the other day, what stopped it was they do not sell or install removable hard drives, they sell tape backups, no thank you, had a couple years ago, never liked them, never will.

Thanks all for your help here and to George triple thanks.

T'wernt nothin. Here's one for everyone. Do a clean install (format and reinstall) of windows and where it asks what you want installed instead of just letting it pick, go through the list an eliminate all items that you have not used. Think carefully, some are necessary.

BTW: added used equipment section to website and used equipment request section if anyone has something to sell or a request for a piece of equipment. Carpet cleaners and floor cleaners visit the site regularly.
